England suffer more misery

Sri Lanka beat England in the latest match of the Under-19 triangular tournament

Cricinfo staff
11-Dec-2005
England at last salvaged some pride in the Under-19s triangular tournament ... but still couldn't manage a win as Sri Lanka edged home with two balls to spare in a high-scoring affair at Savar. England approached this match knowing that they had only their self-respect at stake - and they did themselves proud, racking up 286 with Varun Chopra just missing out on a century. He scored 98 from 101 balls. But it was a day for near-misses for England as Sri Lanka crept home in the final over with two wickets left.
When Chopra and Greg Wood put on 109 for the first wicket, and then Robert Woodman made an unbeaten 79 it looked likely that, at long last, England had a good chance of recording their first win on tour. Sri Lanka's opener Sameera de Zoysa fell early for 2 although a third-wicket stand of 100 between Dimuth Karunaratne, who made 75, and Angelo Mathews, who made 31, set their side on the path to victory.
It was touch-and-go in the closing stages as the momentum swung back and forth between the teams. Sri Lanka lost wickets in clumps, twice losing two wickets for one run, as they edged closer to their target. Rory Hamilton-Brown gave England hope, bagging a haul of 4 for 36, to sit well with Huw Waters' 3 for 49.

The South Africans, who were crushed last week by Western Australia, returned to face another state XI in a three-day match at Perth and enjoyed a convincing first day. But there were growing concerns that the allrounder Jacques Kallis may not be fit for the first Test against Australia starting on Friday.
The tourists racked up 8 for 292 and had the home side 2 for 26 in reply by stumps, with Shaun Pollock taking both wickets. Half-centuries from Graeme Smith, Ashwell Prince and Herschelle Gibbs set the South Africans on their way to their highest total of the tour, which allowed them to declare in the final session. Play was held up in the morning because of wet patches on the square and in the 12 overs that were possible before lunch they lost AB de Villiers for 9.

Liam Buchanan and David Hussey notched half-centuries as Victoria beat Queensland comfortably after restricting them to just 185. Victoria needed only 37.1 overs to reach 4 for 186 and secure five points that vaulted them to third place in the ING Cup rankings. Buchanan, the Man of the Match in just his second game for Victoria, scored 51off 44 deliveries in a run-a-ball stand of 72 for the fourth wicket with Hussey, who was unbeaten on 50.
Jon Moss and Lloyd Mash helped Victoria recover after they lost Michael Klinger for 1 in the first over. Moss struck a quick 27 while Mash dropped anchor with 32 off 70 balls, but they both fell in the space of 17 runs before Hussey and Buchanan, who hit three fours and two sixes, shut out Queensland's chances. Buchanan was caught by Chris Simpson off Nathan Hauritz (4 for 140) with Victoria 46 short of the target but Hussey and Graeme Rummans (20 off 13 balls) finished the job.

Bundela stands tall for MP

A summary of the second day in the latest round of the Ranji Trophy Plate Championship

11-Dec-2005
A sterling effort from Devendra Bundela, the middle-order batsman, took his side to 207 for 6 on the second day at Indore, 112 runs adrift of Jharkhand's total. Bundela's fine innings steadied the ship after Vijay Bharadwaj's offbreaks and a good spell from Mihir Diwakar, the opening bowler, had disturbed Kerala's batting lineup. For MP, the success story of the first session was Anand Rajan, the fast bowler, who bagged five wickets on first-class debut.
Goa 121 for 3 (Asnodkar 64*) trail v Tripura 309 (Chanda 89, Aware 5-71) by 188 runs
Scorecard
Swapnil Asnodkar's unbeaten 64 took Goa to 121 for 3 after two early strikes before tea from Vineet Jain, Tripura's opening bowler, had rocked the home side's top order on the second day at Margoa. Tripura's total of 309 was due in large part to Timir Chanda, the middle-order batsman, who batted 363 minutes for a dogged 89, and a breezy 41 down the order from Jain. Avinash Aware, the Goan fast bowler, had figures of 5 for 71. Asnodkar had added 64 with Saahil Dhuri at stumps and will look to ensure the first-innings lead.

Kumble strikes after Murali's magic

Muttiah Muralitharan's sorcery engineered a sensational collapse before Anil Kumble restored India's advantage with four quick wickets at the end

On a day when two legendary spinners strutted their stuff, the pendulum swung from one side to another before India edged ahead in an engrossing battle at Delhi. Muttiah Muralitharan's sorcery engineered a sensational collapse and Sri Lanka solidified their advantage with two contrasting half-centuries but Anil Kumble ensured India had the final say with a flurry of wickets late in the day.
Once Murali had wrecked the Indian innings with a mystical combination of offbreaks and doosras - when seven wickets fell for 36 - Marvan Atapattu's chisel and Mahela Jayawardene's paintbrush consolidated Sri Lanka's position on a sluggish pitch. But Jayawardene's dismissal at a crucial juncture, attempting a casual sweep to a ball that kept a bit low, gave India a small opening, one that Kumble capitalised on with customary deadliness.

Punjab rode on centuries from Ravneet Ricky and Gaurav Gupta to reach 392 for 4, gaining a 192-run lead, to put Punjab on top by the end of the second day's play against Hyderabad at Mohali. Both came together with Punjab rattled at 31 for 3, but their 213-run association ensured that Punjab assume complete control. Once Gupta fell at the score on 244, Ricky - who smashed 23 fours in his knock - put on an unbroken 148-run stand with Muneesh Sharma to further stretch the lead.

Avinash Aware's triple strike restricted Tripura to 141 for 5 to give the advantage to Goa by the end of the opening day's play at Margoa. Rajesh Banik and Sujit Roy, the Tripura openers, had pushed the score along to 40 when Aware struck twice off successive deliveries. He first trapped Banik lbw and then removed the next man in Subal Chowdhury in a similar fashion. Chetan Sachdev was the lone Tripura batsman to offer some resistance.

Callum Ferguson and Matthew Elliott were the stars for South Australia as they eked out a three-wicket win in an ING Cup match against Tasmania at Hobart. Requiring 226 for victory, the Redbacks squeezed home with 11 balls to spare, thanks to Ferguson's 68 and an unbeaten 40 off just 37 balls from Elliott.
South Australia's run-chase got off to a terrible start when they lost their top three with only 29 on the board. Ferguson and Darren Lehmann then began the revival, adding 65 for the fourth wicket to put the innings back on track. However, Tasmania kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals to ensure that they were never out of the game. When Ferguson was dismissed, the Redbacks needed 86 in 18.3 overs with half their side back in the hutch. Elliott, coming in at No.7, ensured that the task was achieved with a fair degree of comfort, thrashing two fours and two sixes.

Flintoff and Strauss star in England win

England took a 1-0 series lead by beating Pakistan by 42 runs

Andrew Flintoff blasted England's total past 300 © AFP
After the disappointments of the Test series England showed impressive spirit to seal a 42-run win in a high-octane opening one-day international at Lahore. The victory was set up by the middle order pyrotechnics of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff plus a composed 94 from Andrew Strauss. But England had to overcome Pakistan's own fireworks after Salman Butt and Younis Khan had threatened to race away with the run chase.
Pakistan replicated, and surpassed, the thunderous strokeplay of England's middle order and at 132 for 1 after 19 overs were ahead of the game. Then, at 262 for 4, a second surge was on the cards before the last six wickets crashed for 20 runs. Butt and Younis flayed the ball to all parts; Steve Harmison's first four overs cost 30 and Flintoff's 41. Marcus Trescothick was finding life tough as the England captain, but didn't lose his cool. He shrewdly delayed the second Powerplay to rein in the batsmen, then recalled Harmison and Flintoff who struck a vital blow each.
