A tall fast bowler from country New South Wales, Chris Tremain's opportunities were limited with his home state over the first few seasons of his career and he made the move to Victoria during the 2014 off-season. He picked up 16 Sheffield Shield wickets in his first season with Victoria and was their leading wicket taker the next summer with 36 at 21.05, helping them win a second successive Shield title. Tremain was called up for Australia A in 2016 and despite having played only four one-day matches in his career, he began a quadrangular one-day A series with back-to-back five-wicket hauls, and soon was named in Australia's ODI squad for the tour of South Africa in September 2016. He played in four ODIs on that tour.

He dominated the next two Sheffield Shield seasons, topping the wicket tally in 2017-18 taking 51 scalps including a career-best 10-wicket haul against Western Australia. He was a chance to be selected for the winter ODI tour of England but turned up to a pre-series camp in poor physical shape. He bowled well on the Australia A tour of India but was overlooked for the UAE series against Pakistan. He was part of the Test squad to face India at home without getting an opportunity to play. He instead played in a hat-trick of domestic titles with Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades and performed well enough to get on the Australia A tour of England in 2019.

Originally from Yeoval, near Dubbo, Tremain made his debut for New South Wales in February 2012. He played five Shield matches and two List A matches for the Blues before moving south of the border.
