Though a capable seam-bowling allrounder in his playing career, it is in the coaching field that Jerome Jayaratne has earned a reputation as one of Sri Lanka's best. Jayaratne began coaching at his alma mater, St. Thomas' College, in 1997. The school's first XI won one Royal-Thomian big match and drew the other three in his time as head coach there, in addition to claiming one all island trophy.

In 2000 he joined Sri Lanka Cricket's squadron of coaches and his ability was almost immediately recognised when the ICC chose him for a year-long secondment at their offices at Lord's. Following that stint away, Jayaratne rose gradually within SLC, working as manager of coaching in the early 2000s, until he was promoted to head of coaching by the Arjuna Ranatunga-led board in 2008. Jayaratne has held that position since, and in 2015 became the interim head coach of the Sri Lanka side following Marvan Atapattu's resignation.

Jayaratne had been a Sri Lanka prospect in his youth, even touring Australia with the under-19 side in 1984. But he ultimately chose to make a living playing cricket rather than pursue a place in the national side. Jayaratne played eight seasons for a Melbourne Club side whose playing season clashed with Sri Lanka's first-class season. He did, however, lead the Colombo Cricket Club side towards the end of his first-class career. They won the first-class competition under him in 1996.
