Playing Role

Bowling Allrounder

Among a line of modern West Indies pace-bowling allrounders in limited-overs cricket, Odean Smith modelled himself on Andre Russell. He was mainly used as a bowler initially in his competitive career. The first glimpse of Smith's impactful ball-striking abilities, though, came at the Super50 Cup in October 2018, more than three years after his List A debut, when he smashed seven fours and four sixes in scoring 64 off 34 balls from No. 7 for West Indies B. By that time, Smith had already played for West Indies, touring Pakistan earlier that year after several first-choice players opted out of the trip due to security concerns. He didn't put up a notable performance then, but returned to international cricket for another tour of Pakistan - in December 2021 - on the back of 18 wickets for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL that year.

An ODI debut, at home against Ireland, followed in January 2022, and Smith produced an all-round show, including clubbing 46 off 19 balls from the tail-end, and landing the ball on the roof of team-mate Sheldon Cottrell's parked car.

A month later, in India, he dismissed Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the same over in an ODI in Ahmedabad. He also chipped in with the bat in the series and landed himself an IPL deal with Punjab Kings. In a big chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he clobbered 25 not out off eight balls.

Later in 2022, Smith earned his maiden Cricket West Indies contract, was effective with both bat and ball for Amazon in the CPL, and then played in the T20 World Cup in Australia. He had small but impactful cameos in the T20I series against South Africa in March next year, then India in August before being part of the CPL-winning squad with Amazon.

While the West Indies white-ball team moved on to other allrounders ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Smith has continued to ply his trade around the world in franchise cricket, with stints in the ILT20, SA20, PSL and Abu Dhabi T10.
