on the back foot, pressed into the off-side to end a wild first set
N S-Chargers vs Rockets, Eliminator at London, Men's Hundred, Aug 30 2025 - Match Result
9.55pm Nothing left to see here. It was a bold effort from Superchargers, with Dan Lawrence's 44 not out from 29 balls to the fore. But Rockets endure. Join us again tomorrow for the final... can Joe Root and Co. deny Invincibles their three-peat? We shall see!
9.52pm Handshakes! It is done. Trent Rockets progress to the final as the heavy rain wrecks Northern Superchargers' spirited challenge. It could have been a very dicey finish for the Rockets, their target was a stiff one in these conditions. But now they can rest up as best they can, and head over the Thames to Lord's to take on Oval Invincibles tomorrow evening.
9.45pm Really hard to see how this one restarts now. It is properly minging out there now. Lee Fortis and the umps are chatting in the mizzle.
Kasinathan: "Why don't the umpires call it quits and allow Rockets to take rest before the final which is hardly 18 hours away" Well, by 10.15pm they will have to... I guess we've come so far, we might as well go a little further...
9.43pm Matthew Potts to share the honours, as the rain makes its return! A perfect intervention as far as Rockets are concerned. They've kept themselves ahead of the initial required rate, and now DLS will reduce their requirement (and their balls) further... We are now just 14 minutes from that 9.58pm cut-off... although, there are only 20 balls needed to constitute a game now, so that might yet be extended beyond 10pm ... cricket eh?
hits the pitch hard, Root nails his timing on the pull but deep midwicket intercepts. Pepper trips over his stumps as he goes to gather the shy
better length outside off, guided off the back foot to cover
shuffles to the off-side, deflected past the keeper! Banton looked for the scoop, Duffy followed him to the off-side, thumped his pads, but the deflection through fine leg eluded Pepper
short, wide, flashed off the toe through deep third! Offer width, get boshed!
9.33pm It's not quite terminal! The cover is off again, the umpires are coming out... we might yet get a resumption, although still some discussion on the boundary's edge first.
9.30pm This feels terminal. A heavy band of rain is rolling in from the south-west, and it doesn't look like relenting in a hurry. We need to be back playing by 9.58pm for a 25-ball chase but obviously the mop-up will take some time too as the water gathers on the covers. A lot of the crowd have given up the ghost.
9.25pm Off comes the players! Lolz. The rain has got heavier again... the covers come on. Rockets are very happy to flee for the dressing-rooms, knowing that a wash-out takes them through.
We will of course get another readjustment with balls being lost as we speak... Harry Brook and his team are very keen to keep going, as you can imagine.
slides past the legs. The target becomes 133 from 75 balls!
9.49pm It's even heavier now. I think we can start the car...
9.36pm Right, we have a 9.38pm resumption. It's a 55-ball chase, 105 needed! One bowler can bowl 15, four can bowl 10. Will the weather hold? Who rightly knows. The powerplay is now 14 balls.
9.23pm There's some disagreement about the target... 131 has been doing the rounds, but sounds like 134 it is. Out come the players, with Root and Banton tasked with launching this chase in a 19-ball powerplay. A hint of rain in the air, but nothing that will stop them right now. Jacob Duffy has the ball. Play!
9.16pm Right, we are nearly ready for the resumption. A long old night at the Oval, but a chance yet for a grandstand finish.
Joe Root is padded up in the dug-out, no doubt visualising his forthcoming role. A lot resting on his remarkable form.
Oval Invincibles await the winner of this one... and they are doubtless very content that this Eliminator is proving such an emotional drain on their resources!
Alex: "I'm still confused as why Tom Moores wasn't allowed to play. he's already played a couple of matches so why couldn't he stay in the side? makes no sense" To be fair to the regs, there is a need to be tight about such things, given the nonsensical tournament-hopping that has been taking place on the T20 franchise circuit of late. That said, this seems a rare moment of inflexibility. Especially when you consider Adam Zampa is flying 10,000 miles for 20 balls tomorrow!
9.03pm Looks like a 9.25pm resumption is on the cards, and Superchargers' innings has been closed. We'll bring you the target and balls when we hear it.
134 from 75 balls is the target. That feels generous but let's see! The powerplay will be 19 balls. Each bowler can bowl 15.
Andrew: "I'm not sure the target is too generous. Super Chargers didn't have that much batting left, and it's well above the runs per ball they'd managed to that point. Shame to lose what would have been a fascinating end to their innings though!" True, though the dynamics when you know a quarter of the innings is missing are rather different.
Looks like Michael Pepper has taken the gloves as a sub fielder, with Dawid Malan injured... Tom Moores will be livid, as per this week's story on the Newsfile!
8.52pm No news is no news... the covers are very emphatically in place. The ultimate cut-off time is 9.58pm which is the latest that a 25-ball run-chase could be launched... and it sounds like the target in that situation would be 54...
Paul [Thereisso]Muchmore[ofthistocome] adds this splash of colour to the mix: "Drizzle still constant. big Lee's rope has been going around for the last 15 minutes, I guess just keeping the outfield in a condition to enable a resumption if it does stop. Main covers unmoved."
8.29pm Getting heavier again. More covers coming on and brollies going up. We are now into lost-balls territory, and not of the six-hitting variety. In fact, seeing as Superchargers have faced 75, there's probably a case of calling it quits and setting DLS on the target.
Kasinathan: "It is 1.00 am in India. By the time this match finishes I have to switch over to CPL foregoing my sleep. It is one of the days. Hmm"
8.22pm The interval has now been reduced to 10 minutes... fair play to the Hundred regs... they are so flexible they can touch their toes bending backwards.
8.19pm The rain is getting heavier, and off they go again! This is that big band I was talking about earlier... the good news is, I think this might be the last of the heavy stuff. The bad news is, we will be losing balls by the time we resume.
This from the ECB, just before the latest interruption:
The game restarted 20.00
Cut off time 20.30 at present
15 minute interval
Second innings scheduled to commence at 20.44 with second innings due to finish at 21.49
Still no reduction to the number of balls as of yet.
rocks back, smashed hard at extra cover, a good attempt to cut off the fast-moving ball, but the interception rolls back onto the rope
slides back and across, forces a single off the back foot, past Linde's dive to his right
banged in short, gets on top of a measured cut to backward point
round the wicket, lots of air, dipping on the pads as Samit has a wipe at thin air
round the wicket, on the pads, nudged square
Linde returns after Rehan's rough treatment
DaWolf: "Good cameo from Miller but needs Patel/Lawrence to do well to set a decent score. Not a lot of batting to come after."
full length, whipped off the toes, out to midwicket, they want two, but not this time
on the legs, and nudged to midwicket
Miller misses a length ball! A misfire from a free-flowing batter, perhaps didn't expect Stoinis to go back to such regulation areas... he aims a huge wipe over the leg-side and loses his middle stump!
bouncer, sharp but too short
half-volley on the pads, fetch that! Miller doesn't miss those, a magnificent clip up into the length and high over backward square!
outside off, full toss, flat-batted pat out to deep point. Lawrence gave himself room and had to adjust to reach it
round the wicket, fired into the pads, whipped hard off the toes through backward square
low full toss, doesn't get hold of it, two men are lurking in the deep on the leg side but it plugs short of both
round the wicket, decent yorker, tapped with caution out to midwicket. Up comes the hundred
