The Warriors win by seven runs! Full just outside off. Shaheen backs away and smashes it straight to extra cover. No single taken initially but a loose and errant throw eventually allows the single. Will not alter the outcome of the contest, though, and the Warriors have finally won a game in Sharjah!
Warriors vs Vipers, 13th Match at Sharjah, ILT20, Jan 28 2024 - Match Result
10:30pm That will be all from us, folks. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Until next time, this is goodbye from all of us at ESPNcricinfo!
Tom Kohler-Cadmore, the Sharjah Warriors captain is also the Player of the Match: Nice to win this one. We have played good cricket to win two games and keep us in the hunt. Never nice to be hit on the head but kind of woke me up. I was not expecting that in Sharjah, it is normally a bit low. Managed to get a couple away after that. (On the approach today) We spoke about being aggressive all the way through. The guys tried to do that today and got us to a competitive score. We took early wickets, kept picking wickets every time we needed it. It was about not taking a step back today and we did it beautifully. (On plans to Hales) Just trying to bowl the best ball and not give him (Hales) any freebies. Almost try to get him out. If you keep taking wickets, it makes the chase difficult. If he is out in the middle, they win with probably two overs to spare. All the bowlers stood up, put their hand up. Some things we can do better with the bat and there is still more that we can give.
Colin Munro, Desert Vipers captain: (On the performance) Disappointing. You win the toss and once they get to 110 in the first 10 overs, you are always playing catch-up. We did well to pull it back. A bit of panic towards the end and it is a game we let slip. (On the fielding lapses) It was not the easiest sky to pick up the ball. Not too worried about the dropped catches or chances. We were a little sloppy and not at our best. He (Luke Wood) was really gutted to have missed out the first few games and today he proved why he is a world-class bowler and has played for England. (On the next game) Just rest up, mentally prepare. Our skills and execution is letting us down. Make sure that we are mentally fresh enough and put on a show in the upcoming games.
10:15pm Phew, what a game. It ebbed and flowed throughout and in the end, the Warriors just held their nerve better than the Vipers. They only had 22 to defend off the final two overs, yet, got past the line, winning by seven runs. Sams bowled the penultimate over beautifully, much like the rest of his spell. Jawadullah was also tidy in the last over, with Woakes doing his bit prior to that.
Not a great run-chase from a Vipers perspective. They were in it for large swathes but never took the game away from the Warriors, despite the firepower at their disposal. Hales and Azam were the standout batters, although neither would be really pleased with when or how they got out. Shadab, too, struggled at the death, and this seven-run defeat leaves them rooted to the foot of the table.
One legal delivery, and the Warriors will get themselves off the foot of the points table
Sasindu: "I think this is why cricket always steals the fans' hearts."
finds the fence but it is just four! Very full outside off. Shaheen continues swinging like a rusty gate and the ball hurtles off the inside edge past the keeper
Two sixes needed for a tie. Anything less and the Warriors will be home
length delivery down the leg side. Shadab does not make contact with his swipe and the ball pings off the thigh pad towards short fine leg
13 off 3, and Shadab simply needs to find a maximum from somewhere. Some sort of discussion between the batters and the umpires. Not sure what that was about, though
length on off stump. Shaheen swings his bat like an axe but all he manages is an inside edge into his pads. Just a single again
15 off 4 now
sizzling yorker outside off. Shaheen gives it the big wind-up but by the time the bat comes down, the ball is past him
Over to Shaheen. The Vipers need to find the fence, right about now...
hard length on middle and off. Rushes off the pitch and hurries Shadab into the stroke. Splices it to the right of the bowler and gets just a single
Gregory, Jawadullah and Watt are the three options TKC has. And he has gone in with the left-arm pace of Jawadullah. Over the wicket to Shadab. 16 needed off 6
full, wide and way outside Shaheen's hitting arc on the off side. He squeezes it out past extra cover and has to settle for two
18 off 7. The Vipers in dire need of a boundary this ball
juicy full toss on off stump. Shadab tries to hit it into tomorrow and cloths it completely. Mistimed it so badly that it did not even carry to long on
fullish and angling into off stump. Shadab sits deep in his crease and hoicks it towards deep mid wicket
slower delivery hung up full outside off. Shadab tugs it straight back at the bowler, who gets enough of a hand behind it to stop the single
surprise bumper on middle and leg. Shadab is not expecting this at all and gets into an awkward position. Makes a last-ditch attempt to upper cut but is too late on the stroke
Around the wicket to Shadab
borderline waist-high full toss on leg stump. Shaheen swings it away behind square on the leg side. The square leg umpire quickly indicates it was below the waist
22 needed off 12. Shaheen on strike. Sams to bowl the penultimate over. Where is this game headed?
short outside off now. Shaheen gets up on his toes and guides it to deep backward point
starts off with four! Half-tracker on leg stump. Shaheen eyes it up early and smears it past deep backward square leg!
Shaheen on strike now. 27 needed off 14
off-pace on a length outside off. Shadab throws his hands at it and slices it to deep backward point
Azam has been run out! What a moment in the game! Full and wide outside off. Azam drills it to mid off and sets off for a single. He is always struggling, though, and his misery is compounded by the fact that TKC hits the stumps at the bowler's end. Short by a yard, and that is just what the Vipers did not need at this stage!
short and wide outside off. Azam nearly swings himself off his feet but cannot lay bat on ball
back of a length outside off. Shadab opens his bat face and dabs it to deep backward point
darted in full on the pads. Shadab tucks it away towards deep square leg
full on leg stump. Azam gives himself room and drives it down to long off
