hooked into the crowd over deep square, that'll do the job! England win by seven wickets in an emphatic display on their return to coloured clothing
England vs New Zealand, 1st T20I at Chester-le-Street, ENG v NZ, Aug 30 2023 - Match Result
9.10pm: Right, that's a wrap from us. England won the first T20I by a Chester-le-Street, but both sides will start from zero again in Manchester. Do join us for that. For now, Andrew Miller's report is coming at you like a Liam Livingstone six, and stick around for analysis from our man in the north, Cameron Ponsonby. Thanks for your comments. Cheerio!
9.02pm: Time for the presentations. Brydon Carse is Player of the Match on debut: "Obviously a great start to my T20 career, awesome to play in front of a home crowd and put in a good performance. [Allen dismissal] Tried to keep to my strengths, hit the top of the stumps and it paid off with a crucial wicket. Sometimes it can be two-paced [here], especially through the middle. Some skidded through and held up a bit, so I tried to bash a length. I had friends here tonight, I've played here for 10 years and to perform was a special feeling."
New Zealand captain Tim Southee: "Not our best effort, two days to turn it around. The way they took wickets stalled our momentum. Our assessment of the wicket was probably a bit off. We look to assess conditions, we stick to our style and it's worked over a period of time. Glenn Phillips has been phenomenal, especially in sticky situations he finds a way to get us through to a score. Great to see him still in form, like I say, couple of days to turn things around in Manchester."
England captain Jos Buttler. "Delighted, really good performance. Our powerplay, after Finn Allen hitting three sixes, to come back and take the wickets was brilliant, and the spinners really put a strangle on. [Carse] Fantastic start, here on his home ground. Thought he bowled with great skill and pace. We've given guys opportunity, he's taken his and Luke Wood as well. [Malan] He's a class player. Been very consistent at No. 3 in T20s and great form in ODIs when he's got the chance. [Livingstone] He bowled brilliantly. Nice to see a guy who can contribute with bat, ball and in the field, they're gold dust. I thought Moeen bowled brilliantly and we know how good Rashid is. Nice to have them to call on."
8.57pm: Lock up your daughters (so they don't get hit by sixes), England are coming. That was a thorough pasting for New Zealand, who struggled to a below-par score and then were blown away with a full six overs left unbowled. Luke Wood and Brydon Carse, with just four T20I caps between them, did the damage with the ball before Dawid Malan's fifty anchored the chase - and Harry Brook, the man England can't fit into their World Cup squad, lashed it around for 43 not out off 27. The World Cup will be played in a different format (and completely different conditions) but Jos Buttler will be plenty pleased to have got off on the right foot here
driven square coming across outside off
boshed down the ground! Full ball, Brook is motionless other than the blade swinging menacingly through the line to slam Milne into the boundary cushions at long-off
short and creamed through midwicket, not the truest connection as Brook pulls but it runs away
can't get this away to leg
back of a length, wobble seam and Brook defends, the ball bounces clean over his stumps! Would have been an unlucky way to go (but he's had worse this summer)
Milne returns
another slower bumper, pulled without timing
fired in straight, Brook wrists the ball through backward square. Has to dive coming back for two, but makes it home as Seifert collects and breaks the bails
full and driven smoothly into the covers coming forwards
dipping full toss, Brook collapses in his stance as he hoicks it over backward square leg. Pace off, means Ferguson gets away with this one
Still a free hit, baby!
short on the body and Brook swipes it away fine for a couple as Allen scampers around the rope. But this is another no-ball from Ferguson, this time for the front foot!
Free hit coming
oof, 88mph/141kph beamer! Livingstone gasps as the ball comes at him, fenced away off the body through square. No-ball signalled
banged in short, 89mph and flinched down the leg side. Well stopped by Allen down at fine leg
Out walks Liam Livingstone, above Buttler at No. 5
Malan falls, miscued to mid-on! Slower ball from Ferguson and he didn't have anything to work with as the ball sat up outside off. Limp way to go, Malan looks frustrated as he drops to his haunches - but he's done the hard work for his side
Ferguson again
"AC Malan doing the business for England." You know, James Iyer, until now, I never knew that was his nickname
length on the stumps and tucked through midwicket for another single
slower ball flicked through square leg, this time they're kept to one
nudged off the pads, they'll pick up a couple as the leg-side sweepers come in
pace on, 82mph/133kph and blocked coming across
WALLOP! Brook pulls handsomely into the stands! Another pace-off delivery but nonchalantly fetched high over the leg side
back of a length, slower delivery and dabbed into the off side
Southee brings himself back
Syed Mohsin: "Why Buttler isn't opening? a temporary move or am I missing something?" Opted to give Jacks a chance, I think (Bairstow the replacement for Hales, who has retired)
