that will be that! The Royals win comfortably and solidify their spot at the perch of the points table! A half-tracker outside off. Karthik lines it up really early and slams it over mid on. The customary handshakes begin and even though the Super Giants managed to stretch this game into the 18th over, a Royals win never seemed in doubt!
Super Giants vs Royals, 18th Match at Durban, SA20, Jan 23 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Royals won by 5 wickets (with 15 balls remaining)
9:11pm That will be all from us for tonight. We hope you enjoyed our coverage and we will be back with more franchise T20 league action tomorrow. Until then, this is goodbye from Thilak and myself. Take care, folks!
Bjorn Fortuin, Player of the Match: It was a bit on the slower side - that is what you generally expect here. Did not expect it to be that slow. We tried to figure out (how slow to bowl) and that set us up nicely for the back end. We are quite diverse as a group (in terms of our spinners). We complement each other nicely and fortunately, we got the job done (tonight). (On Miller as captain) He has grown as a captain in his own right. Learning from him is cool. We have set ourselves up nicely for the second half of the competition and hopefully we can finish it off. (On his bowling approach) A bit beforehand but it is about adapting as well. In the past, I have been guilty of going searching a little but working well (so far this season).
David Miller, Paarl Royals captain: Going really well. chuffed and pleased with the results. They came hard at us (in the powerplay), we pulled it back really well. Really nice performance with the ball. Malinga came in and pulled it back - 20 from his first over and then three phenomenal overs on the trot (at the death). Nice to have someone like him (to be there at the death). (On the middle order scoring runs) It is great. With the great starts we have had…one of them has performed if the other hasn't. Tonight showed we have depth (in our batting) and closing out the game the way we did. Really pleased with Mitch (van Buuren) and Rubin (Hermann) came out guns blazing, playing the way he does. (On their flight to Durban getting delayed and the hardship it caused) It is challenging. It has been a tough 24 hours but at the end of the day, we have managed it pretty well. Landed this afternoon, performed really well, chuffed with the guys' attitude - walking onto the field and playing really good cricket.
Keshav Maharaj, Durban's Super Giants captain: We were maybe 15-20 runs shy on a wicket like this. We lost our way a little bit. They bowled well, their plans were good. We gave away too many boundaries in the powerplay and could not get back (in the game). We did not take too much pace off the ball, especially in the powerplay. In hindsight, it is hard to say but now, it is about getting results in our favour and anything can happen (after that). Quinny doing what he does at the top. We know he (Klaasen) is due, hopefully he gets three big performances (in the games that remain). Just to the fans, thanks for all the loyalty. The results have not gone our way and we gave it our all. We appreciate you and love you too much, hopefully next year, the results go our way.
8:52pm Not the most spotless of run-chases but the Royals chase down a score successfully for the fifth time this season. Pretorius was excellent at the start and stunned the Super Giants with the intent he showed. Hermann then took over and creamed the ball to all parts, ensuring that the Royals were well ahead when the powerplay ended. van Buuren and Miller then did the heavy lifting through the middle overs and even though both fell before they finished off the job, they had effectively won the Royals the game by then.
Another ordinary outing for the Super Giants. It felt at the half-way stage that they were short and the Royals' opening blitz only confirmed it. Maharaj bowled with control and Noor looked thretaening but as the end of the season looms, they will have to figure out a way to bat better and give their bowlers more to work with.
Everyone up in the ring, barring deep square leg
slower bumper outside off. Galiem waits for it and heaves it towards deep square leg. Scores level!
Galiem is the new batter in
oh dear - Miller has been run out! The Royals making heavy weather of finishing this game! Banged into the track outside off. Karthik swats it towards mid wicket, who misfields initially. That prompts Karthik to call Miller through for the single, even though there isn't one on. Miller tries to get across but is caught short as Mulder hits bulls-eye. Miller is annoyed and storms off. Royals still need two!
safe! Hard length just outside off. Karthik looks for the pull but seems to be bailing out of it by the time the ball arrives. Skews it off the top edge and it falls in front of Smuts, running in from deep third
back of a length outside off. Karthik hangs back and pushes it towards backward point
short outside off. Karthik hops up onto his toes and drops it into the off side with soft hands
Karthik is up and running! Full on the stumps and Karthik knows where the gap is. Mid on had come up to try and prevent the single and Karthik goes over him, lifting it comfortably to get off the mark!
banged into the track. Pitches outside off and comes back in with the angle. Karthik seems to get into a tangle initially but manages to duck under it eventually
Karthik, with all his experience, walks in. The Royals need just seven more
bowled'im round his legs! Dala zips this in very full, tailing into leg stump. van Buuren shuffles across, perhaps aiming to glance it fine. Gets too far across, though, and cannot access the ball. It clips the outside of leg stump and van Buuren is dejected as he walks back!
short outside off. van Buuren uses the depth of the crease and flat-bats it to long on
another boundary, but that might not be enough for the bonus point! Fired in very full on the pads. Ends up as a low full toss and van Buuren paddles it fine. Smuts goes down in instalments to his left and gets nowhere close to it!
googly on a back of a length outside off. van Buuren wafts at it but only grabs a handful of fresh air
four more! Not the most convincing stroke van Buuren will ever play but that will do for now. Fishes at this back of a length delivery outside off and gets a thick outside edge that is enough to beat short third to his left!
miscued but the Super Giants cannot capitalize. That sums up their night! Length on off. Miller looks for the sweep but the extra bounce means he top-edges it. Williamson circles under it in the short fine leg region and then has to hurl himself to his right as the ball swirls late. Does not even get his hands to it in the end
or maybe they are going after the bonus point! Full just outside off. Miller gets down on one knee and slugs it over mid wicket!
21 needed still. PR might not be thinking about the bonus point. They already have 16 points on the board, so have more elbow-room than most
back of a length outside off. van Buuren goes fishing at it and sees the ball whiz past the outside edge
nonchalant! A touch short outside off. van Buuren hops up onto his toes and then lifts up his front leg upon impact. Snaps his wrists through it too and whips it over mid wicket!
short on leg stump. Miller swivels inside the line and helps it down to fine leg
length outside off. Miller presses forward and drives it on the up. Straight to extra cover, though
Around the wicket to Miller
width outside off. van Buuren throws his hands at it and drills it towards deep point
back of a length outside off. Zips off the surface and moves away a little, breezing past the outside edge of van Buuren's late cut
27 needed off 36. Do the Royals target a bonus point now? They will need to get 27 off 12 to win by a bonus point, which will be tough on this surface but is not unattainable. Dala back for his third
