Originals vs N S-Chargers, 9th Match at Manchester, Jul 28 2021, The Hundred Women's Competition

Comms: Matt Roller

Women's match abandoned. "(Lancashire) Lightning strikes and rain," reports George. The Originals get their first point on the point, and the Superchargers maintain their unbeaten record. Jump over to our coverage of the men's game in an hour or two to see if they have any more luck this evening.

3.05pm: Peter Della Penna, my co-commentator today, is also in the Manchester area. "It's been raining essentially since 1pm, on and off to varying degrees of intensity," he tells me. "Just when it seems like it's about to ease off and stop, a fresh wave comes. It was slowing to a drizzle a minute or so ago and now it's flashing lightning and getting quite heavy again."

Wow, we've just had some more pictures from the ground and it is absolutely sodden. Huge puddles on the outfield. Hard to see how we're going to get a game started this afternoon.

2.50pm: "Biblical rain" reports George at Old Trafford. Uh oh. We've just seen some images from the ground on the TV coverage and it looks absolutely sodden, with huge puddles of water on the covers.

Some news for you ahead of the men's game later today (which is also in doubt due to the rain): with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler reporting for England Test duty, David Willey and Carlos Brathwaite will captain the Superchargers and the Originals respectively.

Abd: "It's disappointing, I was hoping for an electric contest between Rodrigues and Kaur, not electric bolts from Zeus."

2.41pm: Ward is now reporting that we have an electrical storm on the way. Hmm. Probably worth getting a cup of tea as we could be here for the long haul.

2.32pm: "We've had some unbelievable thunder, lightning, rain, hail - just about everything," reports Ian Ward on Sky. No rain in the last half hour, but enough that the toss has been delayed. It looks like the boundaries have come in a fair old way after the Originals struggled to hit fours and sixes against Birmingham Phoenix at the weekend.

George Dobell is our man on the ground today and has sent a picture from Manchester of the full covers on the square, with the outfield looking... moist. "It's not raining right now," he reports, but it looks like it will be a matter of time.

Jack: "Interesting option with Verma there, I would have gone with Rodrigues given her recent form." -- You can make up a pretty exciting top five with the India players in this comp: Mandhana, Verma, Rodrigues, Harmanpreet, Deepti. Two of them involved today.

Harish: "Matt, if you were making a new Hundred women's team and had all the options, who would be your top four batters?" -- I reckon I'd be loading up on overseas bowlers so only room for one overseas batter in Shafali Verma. Rest of the top three would be Amy Jones (means I have a keeper sorted), Nat Sciver and Heather Knight.

2.20pm: Today's Hundred action comes to you from Emirates Old Trafford, with back-to-back Northern Derbies between Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers. The weather forecast is somewhere between dodgy and terminal, but fingers crossed it'll stay dry for long enough to get two games in.
