29.1 to KAR Hodge, bowled him, that's not a good leave at all! It's angling in towards about middle and off and it does straighten a bit, but it's definitely not straightening enough to miss off stump and definitely not short enough to bounce over the stumps. Doesn't really move his feet either, so there's no second line of defence when he shoulders arms, and the ball thuds into the top of off stump. 115/5 61.6 to J Da Silva, got him, Woakes prises out Da Silva with an excellent bit of bowling. Loose shot, but prompted by Woakes' skill. The previous one came into Da Silva. This one is back of a length in the corridor, and it leaves him. Looks to steer it behind point with an open face, and only manages to feather it through to Smith. 224/6 67.6 to AS Joseph, gone, Joseph finally runs out of luck. Fullish outside off, outswinger, and he reacts to this ball as he has been doing to all similar balls so far, looking for a flat-bat hit over the off side. Doesn't catch it cleanly at all, and ends up popping a gentle catch to mid-off. 244/7 | ||||||||||

21.5 to M Louis, nicked him off! After all the prodding and missing, England finally find the outside edge... and Louis' hard work again ends with an unfulfilled 20-something. He certainly could have left this, short of a length and moving away. But the hands followed the ball, and Smith swallowed the edge. Fourth time in five Test innings that Louis has fallen to a catch in the cordon. 76/1 25.6 to A Athanaze, short, doesn't get up - and bottomed-edged into off stump! England barge out a third on the stroke of lunch, and you'd have to say that is loose from Athanaze. Keen to pull and keep the scoreboard ticking but he ends up giving his wicket away, undoing some of the hard work West Indies had put in to reach this point. 97/3 68.5 to JO Holder, kersplat! Off stump is on the wonk...! Pitched up and nipping down the line as Holder tries to play across it. He can only look back aghast as the 'thunk' behind him is backed up by the evidence of his eyes. Purses his lips in appreciation. A ripper from Atkinson, with a 69-overs old ball, and that is West Indies' last batter back in the hutch. 246/8 70.2 to G Motie, punched in the air... and Root grabs a blinder behind the keeper! Fierce bumper, Motie in a tangle and he looks like getting lucky as the ball clears the leaping Smith, only for Root to fling himself across from slip and snaffle the catch one-handed (and practically unsighted). Think it came straight off the bat handle, which added to the pace on the ball. 259/9 | ||||||||||

24.3 to KSA McKenzie, clean up on aisle five! Bring out the mop and bucket because Wood has made a mess of the stumps here! McKenzie looks back to see middle stump has been flattened, the sight greeted by a roar from the Edgbaston crowd. Full, 91mph/146kph and ducking inside a half-formed prod to smash the woodwork. Proper fast-bowler carnage, like the dismissal of Usman Khawaja at Headingley last summer. 93/2 28.5 to KC Brathwaite, gone, strangled down the leg side! A frustrating way to get out for a half-centurion, but Wood has been chipping away with this line and length for a while. Shortish at the hip, and he steps across and looks to pull, and only manages to glove it down to Smith. 115/4 | ||||||||||

Tossed up and he can't resist trying to pump him into the pavilion, but there's not quite the distance. 4.1 to BM Duckett, chopped on, two in two! Alzarri gets Duckett, having dropped him in the previous over. Full length outside off, he also goes hard and gets a thick inside edge that rebounds into leg stump. England's giddy start suddenly looks a bit seasick. 29/2 35.2 to BA Stokes, got him! Not the best ball he's bowled, but that's how it goes sometimes. Short, gets up around Stokes' chest, and he's a little cramped for room on the pull, his arms not quite at full extension. Square leg in slightly in front of square, and he hits it more or less straight to the man, who times his jump well and takes it two-handed. 169/6 73.3 to CR Woakes, steps ouit and towards the leg side, and he pops a catch straight to short extra-cover. Gets out in declaration mode. Again Joseph follows him with a shortish ball at the hip, and he punches it straight to the catcher in the covers. 363/9 75.4 to AAP Atkinson, short, hoisted down Motie's throatie at deep midwicket! That is the end of a very handy cameo! England's lead is 94, which at 54 for 5 seemed rather far-fetched. 376/10 | ||||||||||

3.6 to Z Crawley, full, tempting... and the nick is well held! Crawley's fun is over, throwing the hands at one hung out wide. Not quite as full as he initially thought, as he launched into a drive. Holder's buckets scoop up the catch going to his left. 29/1 5.6 to MA Wood, searching line, finds the edge - gone! Low catch but Holder is on it today and makes no mistake as he tumbles forward at second slip. Wood was camped in the crease, fending as the ball straightened on him, and England lose another in this bewildering mini-session. Seales with his second, celebrated with gusto. 31/3 11.5 to HC Brook, gone, West Indies are on fire!!! Lovely delivery, and a loose shot early on from Brook. Definitely not full enough for the cover drive, and wide enough to bring out the angled bat. A hint of away movement, and it kisses the edge through to Da Silva. 54/5 | ||||||||||

10.5 to OJ Pope, bowled him! The angled bat is a treacherous thing on this pitch, because the ball has been keeping low occasionally. Not short or wide enough to cut, and he ends up chopping on and making a mess of his stumps. 51/4 69.2 to JL Smith, bowled him, five short of a hundred! Short ball keeps low, and Smith has to depart, unfortunately. Offcutter, and the length was a pulling length, and Smith has been pulling so well through this innings. This one creeps through low, however, and nips in to sneak under his bat and knock back off stump. 337/8 | ||||||||||

48.2 to JE Root, keeps low and nailed on the front pad! Root is done by Motie once again, and he doesn't even think about reviewing it! Lovely spin bowling, round the wicket, sliding in, drawing him forward and leaving him defenceless when the ball didn't do what he anticipated. This time it's lured McKenzie on the full length, when previously he'd managed to leave. An audible nick snicks through to Smith. West Indies lose their second.... 22/2 38.6 to JO Holder, given! Terrific delivery from Atkinson, perfect length, and he catches Holder on the crease. Big inswing, and Holder shuffles across without going forward or back. Hurries through past the inside edge before Holder can bring his bat down fully to defend, and strikes him on the front knee roll. Holder has reviewed... There seemed a chance that the ball might be swinging down the leg side, but ball-tracking returns an umpire's call verdict on leg stump, and Nitin Menon raises his finger again. 20.4 to A Athanaze, floated up straight and Athanaze plays over it! Too full for the sweep, the ball dips under the bat, turns and kisses the front pad. Nitin Menon doesn't take long to think about it and Athanaze won't review, after a brief chat with his partner. Might it have spun too much? We'll find out for sure when they load up ball-tracking, but he did look pretty adjacent. Once again, Athanaze shows glimpses of his talent but falls cheaply. 53/3 | ||||||||||

45.4 to J Da Silva, pings the pads, and Da Silva walks! Holdstock's finger goes up, just to confirm what the batter already knew. Full, 92mph/148kph and swerving in past the bat to hit the back ankle in front of middle stump: dead as a doornail. England strengthen their hold. 156/6 47.5 to AS Joseph, stump-smashing inswinger, middle goes flying! Wood gets another, Joseph has no recourse to the review system here. Pure fast-bowler catnip, following up the short stuff with a reversing toe-crusher that ducks in past the bat and wrecks the wicket. Good Wood work rearranges the woodwork. 162/7 51.1 to KAR Hodge, big reverse, clips the edge through to Smith! Hodge's resistance is broken, having got stuck without much of the strike. He faced just 18 balls after lunch, losing two of his partners, and finally misjudges a defensive push as Wood swerves one back and nicks him off for his third wicket. 171/8 51.4 to JNT Seales, off stump detonated! Wood is on one here, beaming a smile as he runs through to celebrate with his team-mates. Full and reversing, beats the tentative forward push - having softened him up the previous ball - and hits off stump halfway up. Pow, right in the kisser! England one away from a small chase. 171/9 51.6 to S Joseph, edged and taken, FIVE for Wood! Stokes said someone was going to pay after Nottingham... pitched up and curving away as Joseph stayed leg side and poked hopefully at the ball. Snapped up by second slip diving across to his right, and that is that for West Indies' innings. Three in the over as Wood's pace rips through the tail. 175/10 | ||||||||||

He's been reverse-swinging it, usually away from the right-hander, and now he lands on that perfect length in the corridor. Fullish, but still enough distance between where it pitches and where Louis' bat is after he presses forward to defend. Goes with slightly hard hands, and the thick edge carries nicely to second slip at shin height. 125/4 | ||||||||||
