It was India's 327th and New Zealand's 273rd Test match.

It was the 39th Test between the two sides.The record now reads: India 14, New Zealand 7, Drawn 18.

It was the 18th Test on this ground (second for New Zealand). Now only Eden Gardens-Calcutta (30),Feroz Shah Kotla-Delhi (25) and Chepauk-Chennai (24) have hosted more Test matches in India than Green Park-Kanpur.

It was India's 59th win in its 327th Test.

It was India's 48th win in its 174th Test at home.

It was New Zealand's 139th loss in its 273rd Test.

It was New Zealand's 68th loss in its 143rd Test abroad.

It was New Zealand's 10th loss in its 23rd Test in India.

Umpires Daryll Harper was umpiring in his fourth Test,while AV Jayaprakash was standing in his third Test.

Javagal Srinath, when dismissed Stephen Fleming, completed his 150 wickets in 40th Test. He became ninth Indian and 60th bowler in the world to do so. Srinath is only the second Indian paceman to complete 150 wickets in Test cricket after Kapil Dev (434 wickets in 131 Tests).

The wicket of Chris Cairns (first innings) was Kumble's 150th on Indian soil in his 28th Test. He became second Indian after Kapil Dev (219 wickets in 65 Tests) and 16th bowler in Test cricket to take 150 or more wickets on home soil. The record is Australia's Dennis Lillee. Out of his 355 wickets, 231 came on home soil in 44 Tests.

The partnership of 162 runs between Gandhi and Ramesh is second best for India for the first wicket against New Zealand after the 413 runs world record partnership between Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy at Chennai in 1955-56.

It was also the highest for first wicket at this venue obliterating the 159 runs partnership between SriLankan pair of Sidath Wettimuny and Ravi Ratnayeke in 1986-87. The previous highest first wicket stand for India at this venue was 125 runs between Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan in 1979-80.

Vettori's figures (6-127) was the second best for him after 6-64 against the SriLanka at Colombo SSC in 1997-98.

The third day of play saw only 135 runs being scored (118 by India and 17 by New Zealand) which is fifth worst performance in a full day's play on Indian soil. The record is of 117 runs (on first day)- scored by India against Australia at Chennai in 1956-57.

Anil Kumble, when trapped Matthew Horne lbw in second innings, completed his 250 wickets in Test cricket. He became third Indian after Kapil Dev (434 wickets in 131 Tests) and Bishan Singh Bedi (266 wickets in 67 Tests) and 21st bowler in Test annals to do so.

When he caught Craig Spearman, Sachin Tendulkar completed his 50 catches in 70th Test. He became seventh Indian and 62nd fielder in Test cricket to do so.

Paul Wiseman bagged a pair for the second time in a Test. Interestingly his first pair also came against India (at Wellington in December 1998). Wiseman provided the sixth instance of a New Zealander getting a pair against India. The others being Tony MacGibbon at Chennai in 1955-56, Gary Troup at Wellington in 1980-81, Chris Kuggeleijn at Bangalore in 1988-89 and Martin Snedden at Hyderabad in 1988-89. Wiseman also became third New Zealander after Bob Blair (3) and Danny Morrison (3) to record this entirely unwanted feat on more than one occasion. Overall it was 47th instance of a New Zealander suffering this fate. A pair has now been recorded on 24 occasions (by 22 batsmen) against India. SriLanka's Marvan Atapattu is the only other batsman to do so twice against India.

Kumble's four wickets in the second innings came as LBW. It was the second such instance for him.He had also dismissed four WestIndian batsmen LBW at Mohali in 1994-95. Only two other Indians have taken four wickets as LBW in an innings- Kapil Dev (v Australia, Kanpur,1979-80) and Narendra Hirwani (v New Zealand, Bangalore,1988-89). Just for the record, Australia's Terry Alderman,WestIndies' Curtly Ambrose and Pakistan's Mohammad Zahid hold the world record of most LBW dismissals in an innings - five.

Anil Kumble bagged 10 wickets for the third time in his career. The other occasions being : 14 for 149 against Pakistan at Delhi in 1998-99 and 11 for 128 against SriLanka at Lucknow in 1993-94.

Kumble has now taken 10 wicket match hauls on most occasions for India. He was previously at level with Maninder Singh, Vinoo Mankad, Erapally Prasanna,Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Kapil Dev with two such instances.

Kumble's figures (10-134) are the third best for India against New Zealand after S.Venkataraghavan's 12 for 152 (Delhi, 1964-65) and Erapally Prasanna's 11 for 140 (Auckland, 1975-76). Incidentally Kumble's previous personal best against New Zealand was 9 for 120 at Bangalore in 1995-96.

Kumble has now taken five wickets in an innings on 14 occasions. He thus equalled Bishan Singh Bedi's tally. Now only Kapil Dev (23) and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (16) have taken more five wicket hauls for India than Kumble.

By capturing his lone wicket in India's second innings, Chris Cairns became the third highest wicket taker for New Zealand after Richard Hadlee (431 wickets in 86 Tests) and Danny Morrison (157 wickets in 47 Tests). Interesingly he displaced his father Lance to move to third position. Lance Cairns had taken 130 wickets in 43 Tests, while Chris has now a tally of 131 wickets from 41 Tests.

Sachin Tendulkar has now led India in 4 matches to victory in 19 Tests. His other victories were versus Australia at Delhi in 1996-97 and versus South Africa at Ahmedabad and at Kanpur in 1996-97.
