25 year old Michael Powell has been appointed as captain of Warwickshire. The young opening batsman will replace Neil Smith. The decision will come as a surprise to many who will view a season that saw the county contest a Lord's final, and gain promotion in the National League, as quite successful. Demands are high at Edgbaston however, as supporters grew used to unprecedented levels of success under Reeve and Woolmer in the 90's.
Powell admitted the news game as "a great surprise. I thought I had more chance of an England tour this winter," he commented. "I was a little disappointed not to be picked for the A tour yesterday, but this has more than made up for it. It is a great honour."
He may find life in the field quite hard. Already certain to lose Donald, Warwickshire's bowling resources have been dealt a further blow by news that England seamer Ed Giddins has not been offered a new contract. Although this development will surprise few it has been no secret that Giddins has wanted a change of scenery for some time. Sussex are rumoured to be interested in resigning him.
Also free to leave is 28 year old Graeme Welch. The all rounder has had few opportunities to establish a place in the side this season, and played just seven first class games.
