Lahore, Sept 30: Test discard Ata-ur-Rahman on Thursday again resiled
from his statement before the one-man inquiry commission comprising
Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum, probing match-fixing charges on
Pakistani cricketers and alleged that Wasim Akram has offered him Rs
100,000 to bowl badly in a match against New Zealand.
It was the fourth occasion that Ata-ur-Rahman resiled from his
statement. First, Ata in an affidavit had levelled the same charge
against Wasim Akram. But, he refused to own the affidavit when
appeared before Justice Qayyum for the first time. However, when
Justice Qayyum asked some questions, he requested for in-camera
statement in which he again accused Wasim Akram. In last proceeding,
Ata-ur-Rahman again resiled from his statement for the third time and
said that he was not offered any money by Wasim Akram and said he had
recorded his earlier statements onthe instruction of Aamir Sohail. On
Thursday, he reverted to his first statement, accusing Wasim Akram.
Wasim Akram's lawer Khawaja Tariq Rahim objected that Ata-ur-Rahman
was resiling from his statement time and again which was causing
unnecessary delay. He also suggested the commission to recommend to
the president for appointing a Mohtasib-i-Ala for each tour of
Pakistan team.
Justice Qayyum gave another seven days to Ata-ur-Rahman to tender his
reply for show cause notice issued to him in last proceedings for
changing his statement. Ata will again appear before the Justice on
Oct 7.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) legal advisor Sibtain Fazli said that
some evidences had been given to the Justice proving that Wasim Akram,
Basit Ali, Salim Malik, Waqar Younis, Ijaz Ahmad and Mushtaq Ahmad had
been involved in match-fixing.
Former captain Imran Khan, former PCB ad hoc committee chairman Javed
Burki and chief executive Arif Ali Khan Abbasi did not appear before
the commission.
Imran Khan and Javed Burki were in Multan and Karachi, respectively
while Arif Ali Khan Abbasi was sick.
Itwas learnt through reliable sources, thatthe commission is sending
his recommendations to president on Thursday night.
