Australia v Pakistan 1999-2000

At Sydney, February 4 (day/night)

15-Apr-2001
At Sydney, February 4 (day/night). Australia won by 152 runs. Toss: Australia.
A capacity crowd was treated to another devastating display of one-day cricket by Australia. Just as they did at Adelaide against India, Mark Waugh and Gilchrist (dropped at square leg when seven) laid the foundation for a record score - this time 337, Australia's one-day best, surpassing 332 for three against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in 1989-90. They put on 74 before Gilchrist's explosive fifty (42 balls, one five, eight fours - four in one Wasim Akram over) ended in the 11th over. Ponting also survived an early chance, then hit a merciless 78 from 80 balls; Symonds, Steve Waugh and Martyn drove the hapless Pakistanis to distraction as the total mounted at a breathless rate. Nor did McGrath and Brett Lee offer any consolation prizes when Pakistan replied. Their first four went down blazing for 43 runs in the first six overs. There was a semblance of a recovery from the middle order but, when McGrath returned to claim another three wickets, the match and the series were wrapped up with more than 13 overs remaining. It was Australia's ninth consecutive victory. "They are definitely worthy world champions," Wasim Akram said of Australia. Nothing in the two finals, little throughout the series, suggested otherwise.
Man of the Match: R. T. Ponting. Attendance: 38,123. Man of the Series: Abdur Razzaq.
