†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1981-82

At Melbourne, January 24

15-Apr-1983
At Melbourne, January 24. West Indies won by 128 runs. For the second day running Australia were overwhelmed on another bad pitch and before another disappointing crowd (25,661). As on the previous day the heat was intense, which may have kept spectators away. After winning the toss West Indies were given a fine start by Greenidge, Haynes and then Richards. Greenidge and Haynes put on 65 for the first wicket, Haynes and Richards 85 for the second, and Richards and Bacchus 50 for the third, all four giving a fine exhibition of batting in difficult conditions. With a total of 235 always likely to be far beyond Australia's reach, their batsmen went in as if they were already resigned to defeat. The West Indian fast bowlers took the first six Australian wickets before Gomes finished the match off by taking four wickets with his gentle off-breaks.
Attendance: 25,661.
