Barbados: Top Team Gets Lesson From Schoolboys
by Floyd Branker
Spartan 86 and 162, Schools North 123 and 126-5
CHIC Schools North completed an emphatic five wicket victory
over the mighty Big B Spartan with two overs to spare.
The final day's play began with Spartan 98 for seven and they
were immediately set back, losing their eighth wicket without
addition.
But Kerry Lucas, who resumed on 33, found useful partners in
captain Dexter Toppin and Richard Connelly to add 31 for the
ninth wicket and 33 for the last wicket to push the visitors
score to a workable 162.
Lucas was unbeaten on 64 having slammed five fours and a six in
150 minutes when the innings closed.
The left-arm spin twin of Suelieman Benn who took six for 75 and
Ryan Hinds with three for 43, shared the wickets.
Set 126 for victory, the schools started disastrously losing two
wickets for eight runs. Allrounder Hinds joined opener Pedro
DePeiza for a third-wicket stand of 67 to put the students back
on course.
DePeiza's score of 29 was not a true indication of its value. He
held the innings together while the free scoring Hinds thumped
three fours and a six in his 57.
At 100 for five, Hinds threw his wicket away, lofting
leg-spinner Dave Marshall to long on, when it was still touch
and go for the schoolboys. But Randy Graham and wicket-keeper
Carlo Morris saw them to victory.
Marshall, showing great commitment, took four wickets for 45 to
finish with a match haul of 13 for 86 but the rest of Spartan's
bowling lacked penetration.
