Barbados Trial Match: Hinds the silver lining
The Barbados Nation
Several batting errors earlier in the day were put right when
teenager Ryan Hinds strolled to the crease at Dayrells Road
yesterday.
After watching pacer Hattian Graham and leg-spinner Dave
Marshall scatter out Sherwin Campbell's XI for a paltry second
innings total of 80 on the third day of the second Busta Cup
trial match, the left-handed Hinds stroked a polished unbeaten
31.
He has so far guided Roland Holder's XI to 93 for three in the
second innings as batsmen struggled for timing on a pitch with
no real devil.
Today Hinds will look for his third half-century - and possibly
a century - in the trials and a sure spot in the opening game
against the Windward Islands at Kensington Oval on January 15.
Hinds, the most talented Under-19 cricketer in the island,
smashed four fours in an hour-long stay in which he was in total
control.
There was one blemish when a powerful straight hit burst through
the hands of bowler Winston Reid and into the long-off boundary
for four. Two balls later Hinds added an exquisite drive which
split the cover field in two.
He came in at 43 for one when Sean Armstrong was magnificently
caught by Raymond Griffith at short cover.
Hinds also saw Adrian Griffith bowled by Reid and Horace Waldron
caught and bowled by leg-spinner Terry Rollock for 13.
It was only Waldron's second opportunity in the trials and,
after a first innings of 18, he battled for 34 minutes against
the wiles of Reid before hitting a powerful backfoot drive which
Rollock held on to chest-high.
The fireworks, however, occurred earlier in the day when, after
a 90-minute delay, the Big B Spartan duo of Graham and Marshall
had fun on a wicket which kept a bit low.
Graham snared six for 24 off 12 overs of line and length which
opened eyes to his accuracy and sharpness.
Marshall, full of heart and enjoying his work, ripped through
the lower order with three for two in 15 balls, including three
wickets in the final over which finished off the 2-1/2 hour
innings.
The performances are sure to give the selectors plenty food for
thought and discussion when they sit down in a few days to pick
the team.
They are expected to meet after the Barbados Cricket
Association's board selects a captain and manager for the
tournament.
Philo Wallace, who led Barbados in the last two seasons, is away
on West Indies duty and a number of players are in line for the
job.
They range from former captains Courtney Browne and Roland
Holder, openers Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith, and
36-year-old veteran Reid.
