A ban on glass bottles at cricket grounds is among measures
being contemplated by the West Indies Cricket Board after
Sunday's bottle-throwing incident at Kensington Oval.
Chief executive officer Stephen Camacho described the incident
as part of a very sad chapter in West Indies Cricket that had
marred an extremely successful tour.
Camacho said the missile-throwing was particularly disappointing
because it came only a few days after the regional outcry
against crowd invasions at Bourda, Guyana.
He added that the WICB would be discussing measures to avoid
repetition of the incidents and reiterated that security would
be a key agenda item for the next board meeting in May.
Some of the measures already raised were high fences, public
education and only allowing the use of plastic bottles at all
grounds.
Camacho added that the public should realise that the two
back-toback incidents in Guyana and Barbados had caused
immeasurable world-wide damage to the reputation of West Indies
cricket.
He said that while the particular issue had been resolved in the
short term by the Australians allowing Sherwin Campbell to be
reinstated, this precedent could have far reaching repercussions
in the future.
The board would be seeking ways of ensuring that the course of
future matches was not influenced by the wishes of the crowd.
Camacho said that on the field of play the umpire's decision was
final and there were avenuesoff the field for lodging protests
and complaints.
