Precaution has become the name of the game with New Zealand's World Cup players.
Chris Cairns, who originally never intended bowling in the State Shield had been considering a bowl in the last games of the Shield but he suffered a slight side strain while bowling in the nets for Canterbury as part of his managed build-up.
It is understood that, despite reports, the injury has not ruled him out of bowling during the World Cup. It could delay his bowling in the Cup, but it is hoped he will be able to bowl if not immediately, then certainly later in the tournament.
Daniel Vettori did not play for Northern Districts again today and will not play in Sunday's match as a precaution from a groin strain he suffered before the match in Timaru on Wednesday.
Stephen Fleming also withdrew from Wellington's side for today's match. He has suffered blows on a toe, and a shin in recent matches and took today off. He is expected to play on Sunday for Wellington in the last round of matches.
