Australia suffered their fourth defeat of an extraordinary week, which began with their Twenty20 loss to England and continued via defeats against Somerset and Bangladesh. When Pietersen arrived, England were faltering at 119 for four. But, combining power with wristwork worthy of a squash player, Pietersen struck an unbeaten 91 off 65 balls. Four sixes and eight fours lifted his one-day international average to 162.25 before Lewis, on his home ground, hit the winning run.

Earlier, Harmison took five wickets in a one-day game for the first time, including three for none in four balls: Gilchrist, caught behind, then the well-planned dismissals of Ponting, lbw to a 93mph yorker, and Martyn, upper-cutting to third man. A superlative diving catch by Collingwood at backward point added Hayden, playing a full-blooded square cut, and the fifth was Hussey, whose career-best run-a-ball 84 helped Australia to 252 for nine. But he was at least out, for the first time in one-day internationals, after scoring 229 runs in seven matches. Gillespie's struggles continued: his first over included four wides and a no-ball. But McGrath worried England by bowling Trescothick and Strauss cheaply before Pietersen turned the game.
