At Chester-le-Street, September 3. No result. Toss: England. One-day international debut: A. M Rahane.
Despite the absence of Tendulkar, who missed this game - and, it turned out, the rest of the series - because of an inflamed big toe, India had taken charge when rain spoiled their chances of a first international win of the tour. Cook's decision to bowl seemed legitimate given early cloud cover, but Parthiv Patel, dropped on seven at backward point by Stokes, and Rahane set an unflustered platform for a more-than-useful total; only Patel's excitable drive cost him a maiden one-day hundred. Kohli helped add 103 for the third wicket, but the unfortunate Rohit Sharma suffered an early and painful exit from the series when Broad broke his right index finger first ball. Although Praveen Kumar held no such terror, his swing removed both England openers before the weather intervened. Afterwards, Dhoni again queried the use of technology after Dravid - in his first one-day international for nearly two years - was given out to a catch behind on an England referral when Hot Spot detected no evidence of an edge.
