England v New Zealand

England won by an innings and 215 runs, outclassing New Zealand

England won by an innings and 215 runs, outclassing New Zealand. On a wet, difficult pitch, England struggled at first when Dexter won the toss, but recovery came when Barrington and Cowdrey added 166 in two hours, forty minutes, a record for England's fourth wicket against New Zealand.
Barrington's 126 took four and a quarter hours and included one 6 and fifteen 4's. A crowd of 23,000 saw England reach 328 for five on the first day.
Parfitt and Knight trounced the bowling on a much easier pitch adding 240 in three hours, thirty-five minutes, a record for England's sixth wicket in Test cricket. Parfitt's 131 (fourteen 4's) took four hours, fifty minutes, and Knight's 125 (fourteen 4's) came in three hours, thirty-five minutes. Dexter declared when England's total of 562 for seven was the highest ever made against New Zealand.
New Zealand began badly and were 66 for four when rain ended play an hour early on the second day. Despite a good innings by Reid and a stand of 95 for the eighth wicket between Yuile and Motz, New Zealand followed on 304 behind.
Hopes of any fight were dashed when three wickets fell at the same total in the last fifteen minutes of the third day and the match ended after sixty-six minutes on the fourth morning.
