England v Sri Lanka

At Manchester, July 7

15-Apr-2003
At Manchester, July 7. Sri Lanka won by 23 runs. Sri Lanka 4 pts. Toss: Sri Lanka.
On a slow, dusting pitch, Sri Lanka's spinners exposed old English failings against the turning ball. After racing to 100 for two in the 19th over, England were kept in check by Chandana, Samaraweera and Jayasuriya, who between them bowled nearly 29 overs and took five for 90 as the batsmen failed to adjust to the lack of pace; three were run out in the ensuing panic. Earlier, Sri Lanka had collapsed to spin too after an inventive 70 off 79 deliveries from Sangakkara. Vaughan, with just 130 balls' experience in one-day internationals behind him, picked up four for seven in 15 deliveries with his looping off-breaks to help hurry out the last seven wickets for just 44. The batsmen on both sides weren't the only ones to get in a tangle. Umpire Dave Orchard missed the first four overs of the match after turning up late because he thought it was a day/nighter. The third umpire, Jeremy Lloyds, stepped in. Tudor finally made his one-day debut, almost four years after playing his first Test.
Man of the Match: K. C. Sangakkara.
