Earlier, West Indies had themselves conjured 92 from their last ten, having been restricted by tight bowling and good fielding to 151 for four in 40 overs. Logie, Dujon and Harper (22 off Pringle's last over, the 49th) cut loose as England's control slackened. England's innings began slowly, and when Gatting and Gooch, who put on 58 in nine overs, were out to Hooper's slow-medium in the 27th over, they were in trouble. But Lamb, slow to start, found allies in Emburey (fifteen balls) and DeFreitas (21 balls). The target from three overs was 35, but Walsh went for 16, Lamb scoring 15 of them. Patterson's last over realised just 6, leaving 13 still required. At Sydney, Lamb had hit Reid's last over for 18; now he hit 2 and 4 from the first two balls. Then Walsh gave away 4 leg-side wides and followed this immediately with a no-ball, from which Lamb took a single. The hapless bowler's third attempt at his third ball, a full toss, was carved to the boundary by Foster.
