England v West Indies 2000

At Nottingham, July 20

15-Apr-2001
At Nottingham, July 20. West Indies won by three runs. Toss: England. International debut: P. J. Franks.
The finalists long since decided, England rested Caddick and gave a cap to 21-year-old Paul Franks on his home ground. It was hardly an ideal debut: his wayward nine overs went wicketless and he was run out for four by Stewart in the last over of the game. That last over - England began it needing five runs with three wickets remaining - brought out familiar failings of hesitancy and lack of confidence as Gayle's off-spin picked off the last two wickets. For once, it happened in a meaningless match. Not that the West Indians stinted on celebrating their sole tournamentvictory. Stewart's contribution had been immense: he hit his second hundred in three days and carried his bat. No one else passed 37. Without Lara, nursing a hamstring injury, West Indies were underdogs and, at 139 for seven, in a muddle until a brisk 29 from Rose took them to 195. At 46 without loss, England had been coasting, but three wickets in nine balls from King wreaked significant damage.
Man of the Match: C. H. Gayle. Attendance: 13,592; receipts £348,874.
