At Sydney, December 15 (day/night). Zimbabwe won by 13 runs. Toss: Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe made it two wins in two matches against England, having beaten them by nine runs in their only previous encounter, at Albury in the 1992 World Cup. It was their only win in this competition. They owed much to Grant Flower, who carried his bat for 84, his highest score in one-day internationals. He was fortunate when umpire Hair ruled he had not been run out on 26, without calling for the replay, which would have testified against him. With Houghton, Flower added 110 in 24 overs. But seven wickets then fell for 34 as the lively Gough took five for the first time in international cricket. England struggled against accurate bowling on a slow, low pitch, especially after Strang dismissed Gooch and Thorpe in his first over. The run-out of Zimbabwe-born Hick in the 47th over sealed their fate.
Man of the Match: G. W. Flower. Attendance: 6,337.
