In a very enjoyable evening, Gauteng Cricket Board hosted the pre-seaon cocktail party for suite owners, board mebers and clubs. Caterers were able to show their wares in a lavish setting of the Wanderers Long Room, as guests enjoyed an introduction to this season's Gauteng Team as well as being addressed by various members of the gathering.
Guest of Honour Mr Gungubele, minister for sport and recreation in Gauteng, was called upon to say a few words. Mr Gungubele was able to give those gathered a message on how cricket could aid in creating and building a better society for all, he was also able to find humour in the task.
Richard Snell's benefit year was launched as he made an introduction to his aims and goals for the season. After commenting that his start at Gauteng had seen the older players receiving benefit seasons, he found himself in the position that it had now crept upon him to be one of the older team members.
Dave Lello, speaking on behalf of Gauteng's sponsor, Datatec was filled with a conviction that suite owners and clubs alike should utilise their facilities to the full (which referenced Supersport games and the smaller Standard Bank games), in an attempt to further build the game and encourage the team. Admittedly, playing to a small crowd must be an uninspiring sight to a team that is totally committed to bringing home the Silverware to Gauteng.
While the evening was a great success and all who attended had an enjoyable time, it is our wish at Gauteng Cricket that players, supporters and suite owners alike are able to grow together through the year.
