Kent 342 for 9 (van Jaarsveld 118, Stevens 88, Giles 5-82) v Warwickshire
Scorecard
Martin van Jaarsveld marked his Championship debut for Kent with an attractive century on the opening day at Canterbury, but another five-wicket haul from Ashley Giles kept Warwickshire very much in contention. After Robert Key (4) fell to Heath Streak, van Jaarsveld added 133 for the second wicket with David Fulton. Giles then struck his first two blows before Darren Stevens, also on his Kent Championship debut, steadied the innings before having his off-stump uprooted in the quest for quick runs with the tail. van Jaarsveld fell to Giles after striking 15 fours, as did Geraint Jones following an aggressive 32. From 301 for four Kent slumped to 342 for nine and will feel they have wasted an opportunity to bat Warwickshire out of the match on a pitch where the ball tended to stay a little low at times.
Nottinghamshire 399 for 6 (Hussey 117*, Richardson 5-75) v Middlesex
Scorecard
David Hussey launched his season in impressive fashion with an important century but Stephen Fleming suffered a more sobering beginning, falling for a second ball duck in his first game as captain of Nottinghamshire. Jason Gallian and Darren Bicknell opened with a solid stand of 74 and when Gallian edged to the wicketkeeper Anurag Singh moved the score to 127 for one before three quick strikes from Alan Richardson, including Fleming. But Chris Read (63), with a point to prove to the England selectors, combined in a century stand with Hussey and would have been thinking of three figures when Paul Weekes dismissed him in the last over before tea. Mark Ealham (47) also offered good support until Richardson trapped him lbw for his fifth wicket, but Hussey remained secure as Nottinghamshire closed one run short of a full set of batting points.
Hampshire 67 for 1 trail Sussex 252 (Yardy 104, Tremlett 6-44) by 185 runs
Scorecard
Following their backs-to-the-wall win against Gloucestershire, Hampshire produced another impressive fightback, led by Chris Tremlett, to end the opening day against Sussex in a strong position. This seemed unlikely when Sussex had cruised to 189 for two mid-way through the afternoon session, with Murray Goodwin (87) taking the attack to Shane Warne. But Billy Taylor bowled Goodwin and Warne had Chris Adams caught and bowled to break the back of the Sussex batting. Michael Yardy notched his second consecutive century but when he was caught behind from Tremlett the floodgates opened and Tremlett ran through the tail to finish with career best figures of 6 for 44. James Kirtley struck back with the wicket of Michael Brown but James Adams and Simon Katich guided Hampshire to the close.
