Glamorgan have secured promotion to Division One of the County Championship
after securing ten points in their draw with Middlesex at Sophia Gardens.
This left the Welsh county in third place in the Second Division, and they
will be promoted into the First Division in 2001 along with Northamptonshire
and Essex.
Captain Matthew Maynard was delighted with the news that the club will be
playing in the First Division next season. "It has been our aim all summer
to secure promotion into the First Division, and I'm so pleased that the
boys have done it. We have the makings of a very strong squad and I'm sure
the team will be pressing for further honours in 2001."
Coach Jeff Hammond was also pleased with the news that Glamorgan have gained
promotion. "It is a great reward for the team, who have played some
attractive cricket throughout the summer, winning more games than we have
lost. Gaining promotion means that we now have something to show for our
efforts. Had we not gained promotion, all we would have had to show for 2000
would have been getting to the Benson and Hedges Final at Lord's."
"This final round of games has also shown the value of a divisional
Championship, with so many of the county sides throughout England and Wales
playing meaningful games right until the very last day of the season. There
has been a lot of intensity in this game with Middlesex, which would not
have been there had it not been for two divisions."
