The Kenyan government's battle to oust the current KCA executive took another twist today when it froze all the association's bank accounts.
The actual ramifications of the move are unclear as it has been widely reported that the KCA has been unable to pay bills for some time. With no sponsorship, what little income it has been receiving has come from the ICC, but even that is believed to have been stopped as the ICC's concern at allegations of mismanagement inside the association has grown.
Ochillo Ayacko, the Kenyan sports minister, was allegedly told by Joshua Okuthe, chairman of the Kenya National Sports Council, at the beginning of January that the KCA was virtually insolvent, and Cricinfo has several examples highlighting the lack of available funds.
In November, we reported that Andy Moles, at the time the national coach, had not been paid for three months and also that there was insufficient money to buy diesel for the motor roller at the KCA's academy. The KCA is also being sued by Nairobi Gymkhana over non payment of debts and a number of players maintain that they are still owed money from almost two years ago.
The freezing of the accounts means that the KCA staff of around 30 cannot be paid this month and is yet another blow to the attempts by the KCA executive to retain control of its remaining assets.
