The ICC East Asia-Pacific's inaugural women's tournament was announced recently by ICC EAP Project Officer Russell James and PNG Cricket Board Operations Manager Lakani Oala at a packed media conference in Port Moresby.
The 2006 EAP Women's Cricket Challenge will be staged in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), and will see Japan facing the host country for the right to progress to the next stage of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifying Series.
The event, to be held in August/September 2006, will be the first-ever ICC event (men's or women's) to be staged in Papua New Guinea.
In launching the EAP Women's Cricket Challenge, PNG Cricket Board Operations Manager Lakani Oala made note of the event's significance.
"Papua New Guinea is delighted to be selected as the host country for the 2006 EAP Women's Cricket Challenge. PNG Cricket has been waiting some time for the right to host an ICC event and we look forward to making it a success".
The event will be the first for Papua New Guinea as part of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifying Series, while it will be Japan's second time as part of the qualifying structure, having competed at the IWCC Trophy in Ireland in 2003.
