†INDIA v SRI LANKA 1989-90

At Ahmedabad, October 22

15-Apr-1991
At Ahmedabad, October 22. India won by 6 runs. Toss: India. Sri Lanka almost toppled the tournament's hosts, India, another of the late arrivals from Sharjah. The Sri Lankans began their final over needing 8 runs with two wickets in hand, but were thwarted by Kapil Dev. Gurusinha was again their batting strength, recording his highest one-day international score as his team worked convincingly towards an Indian total of 227. This owed much to Sidhu's confident 80. India's third-wicket stand of 61 between Sidhu and Amarnath came to an unexpected end when Sidhu sent back his partner and Amarnath, the striker, was adjudged by umpire Khizar Hayat to have obstructed the field. Amarnath had kicked away the ball as Ratnayeke, the bowler, and Ranatunga were converging on it. This was the second such dismissal in a one-day international - Ramiz Raja, for Pakistan against England at Karachi in 1987-88 provided the first instance - and it gave Amarnath a dubious double. In 1985-86 he had been dismissed handled the ball in a World Series Cup game against Australia at Melbourne.
Man of the Match: N. S. Sidhu.
