India v West Indies, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the second ODI, India vs West Indies, 2013-14

15-Apr-2014
At Visakhapatnam, November 24, 2013 (day/night). West Indies won by two wickets. Toss: West Indies.
During the Tests, Sammy had undermined his position by getting out to shots that were either careless or clueless. But at Vizag, free of leadership duties, he found his feet on a dewy surface, inspiring West Indies to a series-squaring win even while most of his team-mates slipped up. Kohli had earlier hauled India back from a middle-order stumble, but he hooked to a diving long leg on 99 - just failing to become the first player to record five one-day international hundreds two years running. Dhoni's customary late assault brought up his 50th half-century (excluding those he turned into three figures) in one-day internationals. As night fell, the conditions turned in West Indies' favour, with the ball changed three times because of dew. Only once before had four West Indians scored fifties in the format. But, barring Sammy, they lacked resolve: Darren Bravo was dropped three times in four deliveries, and Powell, knowing a relatively dry replacement ball had just been taken, was stumped on the charge. For Jadeja to concede just 44 in these damp conditions was no mean feat; he picked up Simmons late on to become the first man to 50 one-day international wickets in the calendar year, pipping Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal, in Cape Town, by an hour or so. Wild slogging from Holder and Narine only added to the pressure, but Sammy stayed resilient, and hit the winning run with three balls to spare. It was West Indies' fourth-highest successful run-chase, and the first time they had reached a 280-plus target since 2004.
Man of the Match: D. J. G. Sammy.
