International Cricket Council (ICC) officials Tim Anderson and Russell James arrived in Port Vila on Tuesday to assist preparations for the EAP Cricket Cup, Vanuatu 2005. This tournament will be held in Port Vila from September 23 to 29, and is an ICC East Asia - Pacific (EAP) regional World Cup qualifying event.
Six countries will compete in the EAP Cricket Cup including Samoa, Japan, Indonesia, Cook Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. The tournament will be hosted by the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA), and will involve five days of round matches, followed by a final. The winner will advance to the next stage of World Cup qualification.
Important components of the ICC visit include ground inspections of new cricket facilities next to the Korman Stadium and at Club Hippique, and a drive to attract local corporate and government support for the tournament.
ICC EAP Regional Manager Tim Anderson said the EAP Cricket Cup is a significant regional sporting event that presents Vanuatu with a unique opportunity to gain exposure on an international scale.
"Cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in Vanuatu, and is a sport that attracts considerable global attention," stated Anderson.
"Given the EAP Cricket Cup is a part of the ICC's World Cup qualifying structure and includes teams from both Asia and the Pacific, we expect a lot of interest both locally, and throughout the cricket playing world," he added.
A number of potential tournament supporters will be approached during the visit.
While in Port Vila Anderson and James will also honour Vanuatu Cricket Association President Mark Stafford who was recently awarded the ICC Lifetime Service Award for his role in developing cricket in Vanuatu.
"Mark has been the cornerstone of Vanuatu cricket administration for many years, and he was commended by the judges for his vision in pioneering the progress of cricket in Vanuatu from a social activity to a popular competitive sport with grassroots and senior development programs," said Anderson.
The Lifetime Service award recognises individuals who have provided a minimum of 10 years service to cricket development.
