Kingston Cricket Club won the Sandals Limited Overs cricket
competition for the first time when they defeated St. Elizabeth by 48
runs at Kaiser Sports Club yesterday.
Scores: Kingston 264 for six wickets, off 50 overs, St. Elizabeth
216 for nine wickets, off 48.2 overs.
Batting first after winning the toss, Kingston got off to a good
start. Openers Raymond Ferguson and St. Jago High School player
Nicholas Austin set the tone very early for the Tigers scoring at over
five runs an over. With the score on 31 however Austin fell ill and
had to leave the field.
Mario Ventura joined Ferguson and the two continued the onslaught on
the St. Elizabeth bowlers bringing up the 50 in 9.5 overs and the 100
in 20 overs. However, Ferguson who was playing very well was the first
to go trapped leg before by spinner Paul Patrick for 46. He hit eight
fours.
Austin returned after the fall of Ferguson's wicket, but three runs
later Ventura departed for 33 (four fours off 64 balls) brilliantly
caught and bowled by Patrick with score on 103.
Nehemiah Perry and Austin continued to dominate the bowling smashing
the ball to all parts of the field. They added 93 runs for the third
wicket bringing up Kingston's 150 in 34 overs.
Austin was particularly aggressive reaching his half century when he
pulled pacer and captain Clive Banton over the square leg boundary for
six. He finally went for a well played 55 (nine fours and a six) made
off 80 balls.
Perry went shortly after caught by Krishana Edwards off the bowling of
Kerron Baker for 48. At the end of the innings captain Black was 33
not out with three fours and two towering sixes while Valentino
Ventura chipped in with 23.
The main wicket-takers for St. Elizabeth were Baker with three for 63
and Patrick two for 42.
St. Elizabeth struggled after losing their first wicket at 20, Roger
Roye going leg before for ten off the bowling of Matthew Fender. Carl
Wright and Edwards attempted to keep the scoreboard ticking but at 47
Edwards was caught off the bowling of Fender for 13.
It was left to Wright and Wayne Billings to steady the St. Elizabeth
innings with a third wicket partnership of 45. Wright played some
handsome cover drives and square cuts before he was bowled by Perry
for 45 made off 81 balls.
Billings (47), Sheldon Gordon (36) and Baker 49 all played well but
they were tied down for long periods by the tight Kingston bowling.
St. Elizabeth's 200 came off 47 overs and the 150 off 39 overs. The
main wicket takers for Kingston were Valentino Ventura, who bowled 3.2
overs and took two for 21, Cunningham 2 for 31 and Fender 2 for 36.
