Mohammad Kaif, left out of the Indian team for the first Test against Pakistan at Mohali, made the most of his free time, leading Central Zone to victory in the Duleep Trophy against North Zone at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Central Zone won a low-scoring match midway through the third day, rattling off the 141 needed for victory, losing just one wicket in the process.
Sanjay Bangar, who opened the innings, made an unbeaten 62, and Kaif helped himself to 48 as the target was overhauled in 33.1 overs. There was only one blip in the graph for Central Zone, and that came when Naman Ojha (26) was dismissed, caught by Mithun Manhas off the bowling of Gagandeep Singh. By that stage Central had moved to 52, and were well on their way to victory. Bangar and Kaif then put their heads down and took Central Zone to a nine-wicket victory.
