Simon Katich hopes to meet with Australia's selectors to discover where he stands after the Test exits of Damien Martyn and Justin Langer. Katich has not played a Test since the 2005 series against West Indies and he was phased out of the limited-overs squad during the Champions Trophy.
Katich, the New South Wales captain in the current match against Victoria, said in the Sydney Morning Herald he had tried to put thoughts of an international return at the back of his mind. "However, I did want to speak to the selectors to see if there was any possibility of being able to force my way back in," he told the paper. "Hopefully, I'm having that chat this week ... But at the end of the day, I've got to go back and make some big scores and play well."
In two Pura Cup games Katich has moved to fourth in the domestic averages with 323 runs at 80.75 and he has 161 one-day runs at 32.20. He hoped he could follow Martyn's lead and recover from being dropped.
"In the recent past the selectors have shown that guys are able to get back in [to the Test side]," Katich said. "Even though I'm 31, I don't see that as being too old. Now it's a matter of piling on the runs in first-class cricket and giving [the selectors] every chance to pick me."
