Sussex, who were among the pre-tournament favourites, fell to their second loss as Hampshire beat them by six wickets off the last ball at Hove. Murray Goodwin (69) set Sussex on their way and then Dwayne Smith launched a remarkable onslaught with six sixes in a 27-ball unbeaten 72. A total of 204 for 6 appeared more than enough but Michael Carberry (58) led Hampshire's perfectly-timed chase.
Durham made it two wins in two with a six-wicket win over Leicestershire in front of 3000 on a slow-paced pitch at Grace Road. It was very much a South African affair as Morne Morkel took 4 for 30 and Shaun Pollock 2 for 15 to limit Leicestershire to 142 for 8, Boeta Dippenaar top scoring with 47. Durham recovered from an early wobble to ease home with two overs to spare, Dale Benkenstein (48*) and the oddly English Will Smith (40) seeing them through, although it was a six from Morkel that completed the victory.
The night's drubbing came at Derby where Lancashire romped to a ten-wicket win over Derbyshire under lights with four overs in hand. Sajid Mahmood (3 for 12) ripped the heart out of the Derbyshire innings with three quick wickets and, after a recovery of sorts, Gary Keedy (4 for 15) polished off the tail. A target of 112 was not challenging, and Mal Loye (54*) and Lou Vincent (50*) made the most of some lacklustre bowling to get in practice in the middle.
Nottinghamshire beat a below-par Yorkshire by four wickets in a shortened 15-over-a-side game at Headingley. Nottinghamshire were given a boost by Will Jefferson and Samit Patel who added 60 in four overs, and when Anthony McGrath stepped up to bowl the final over there were five wanted; Adam Voges smashed the second ball over mid-wicket.
There was no repeat of Graham Hick's fireworks of 24 hours earlier as he failed to score in Worcestershire's 33-run loss to Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Andrew Hall's 66 helped Northamptonshire to 182 for 4, but after reaching 98 for 2, Worcestershire lost their last eight wickets for 51 as the overs ran out with Hall taking 6 for 21, finishing affairs with three wickets in four balls.
For the second time in three days Somerset squandered a good start as they slid to a 14-run loss by Glamorgan at Cardiff. Marcus Trecothick (38) and Justin Langer (62) guided them to 62 for 0 in pursuit of 171, but Robert Croft (3 for 12) choked the middle order as five wickets fell for 28.
