New Zealand to play in Independence tourney
New Zealand on Tuesday committed to play in a limited overs
international tournament in India next May, the country`s cricket
board chief executive Chris Doig told the media in Wellington.
The tournament is being hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Indian Independence.
"We`ve been given tentative dates, for the last three weeks in
May, and we`ve been told it will be a limited overs tournament,"
Doig said. "We know nothing more than that, not even the identity
of the other participating nations. But as far as I am concerned,
it is certain we will go, we`ve already told India we will
participate."
The Indian cricket season normally ends in April, as the weather
in May-June is generally too hot for top international sides.
The tournament, thus, is expected to feature a series of daynight games.
