In England's first 20-over outing since their failure at the World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa, they made a mockery of that disappointment and played the short form of the game as if to the manner born. For New Zealand, things lurched from bad to worse: on top of Shane Bond's enforced omission after he signed for the Indian Cricket League, the captain, Daniel Vettori, was missing with an ankle injury. England took full advantage. Their success lay largely in the hands of Mascarenhas, who in 14 balls performed his big-hitting party trick. He struck Patel's off-spin over long-on and into the upper tier of the West Stand for four consecutive sixes, lifting England towards a more than handy 184. Mascarenhas went on to help Sidebottom reduce New Zealand to 70 for six, their only consolations being Oram's 61 in 40 balls and encouraging international debuts from Jesse Ryder and Tim Southee.
