NEW ZEALAND v WEST INDIES 1994-95

At Wellington, January 25

15-Apr-1996
At Wellington, January 25. West Indies won by 41 runs. Toss: New Zealand.
Young and Jones raced to 50 in the 11th over, with Young's square drives recapturing the aggression of his middle-order play for Northern Districts rather than his recent efforts as a Test opener. But once the openers left, New Zealand slipped behind the required rate of five an over. West Indies had responded to a deep-set field by running 105 singles; Rutherford estimated his team's poor fielding gave away 20 runs. Lara reached 3,000 runs in his 79th one-day international, hitting 72 off 85 balls after the openers were skittled early on, and Cummins whacked 44 off 38 at the end.
The Basin Reserve square was vandalised the previous day, though the match was not held up. This incident followed the occupation of TVNZ studios by Maoris protesting that cricket telecasts were being given preference over the daily news in Maori.
Man of the Match: B. C. Lara.
