Pakistan v Australia, 2012

Wisden's review of the third ODI, Pakistan v Australia, 2012

Osman Samiuddin
15-Apr-2013
At Sharjah, September 3, 2012 (day/night). Australia won by three wickets. Toss: Australia.
In years to come the full effects of an untaken review ought to be examined, in terms not only of the result but the impact on the side not taking it. Saeed Ajmal had just claimed the crucial wicket of Clarke in the 18th over of Australia's chase, and in came Mike Hussey. He was trapped plumb in front fourth ball, but Billy Bowden turned down the appeal, and Pakistan - excitable and unreliable with reviews - decided not to challenge his decision. It would cost them, even though Ajmal dismissed David Hussey and Bailey soon after. But the senior Hussey steadied himself and advanced to 65, before a whirlwind innings from Maxwell - 56 not out from 38 balls, ending with the match-clinching six off Junaid Khan - sealed another tight win and the series. Again, Pakistan wondered how they hadn't scored more, especially given the platform laid by Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed; again, they had to conclude that their own rashness and Starc's energy had combined to deny them. Abdur Rehman, who had not been picked for the upcoming Twenty20 matches, flew through the night to England to play on what was now the same day for Somerset in a County Championship match at Hove.
Man of the Match: M. E. K. Hussey. Man of the Series: M. A. Starc.
