Panesar breaks a decade-long drought

England retained the Wisden Trophy by beating West Indies by 60 runs in the third Test at Old Trafford on Monday. While the cricket wasn't spectacular, the Test had plenty to offer in terms of statistics and trivia.

West Indies' determined run chase, which ran out of steam on 394, chasing 455 for victory, was incidentally the highest total of the match. England had scored 370 and 313 and West Indies were dismissed for 229 in their first innings. There have been only ten instances where a team scored the highest total of the Test in the fourth innings but still lost, and West Indies' 394 is ranked second.

The first such occurrence took place at Sydney during the third Ashes Test in 1885. Australia scored 181 and 165 while England were dismissed for 133 and had to chase a target of 214. At 92 for 6, they didn't look like getting close but Wilf Flowers and Maurice Read added 102 for the seventh wicket. Eventually England came within a stroke of tying the match but were all out for 207.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored 50 in the first innings and was unbeaten on 116 in the second innings at Old Trafford and moved past Alec Stewart to second place on the list of batsmen with the most runs in lost Tests. Lara holds that record by a significant margin. Lara has scored 5316 runs in 63 Test defeats, the most for any player, with 14 hundreds and an average of 42.19.

Chanderpaul's runs tally in England is now 884 after ten Tests. His average of 68 is ranked fifth among batsmen who've played at least ten innings in England. Among the current England batsmen, only Kevin Pietersen and Cook appear in the top 20. Pietersen averages 62 after 15 Tests at home, while Cook's sixth Test hundred at Old Trafford boosted his average to 59.75

Panesar was adjudged Man of the Match at Old Trafford for taking 4 for 50 in the first innings and 6 for 137 in the second, his first ten-wicket haul in Tests. It was also the first time an English spinner had taken a ten-wicket haul in nearly a decade. The last instance was Phil Tufnell's 11 for 93 against Australia in the dead rubber at The Oval in 1997. In fact, since Tony Greig took a ten-for with his part-time offspinners at Auckland in 1975, English spinners have taken only four ten-wicket hauls with Tufnell accounting for two of them.

Panesar bowled 411 balls in the third Test against West Indies and didn't bowl a single wide or no-ball even though 167 runs were conceded through extras. It was the second highest number of extras conceded in a match after the Bridgetown Test between West Indies and Pakistan in 1977, a match which had 103 runs in no balls.

This was Michael Vaughan's 21st Test win as captain, beating Peter May's England record of most Test victories. Vaughan is currently tied with Sourav Ganguly and Greg Chappell but he has quite a long way to go before he catches Steve Waugh, who has led Australia to 41 victories. Ricky Ponting, however, is the surest bet to overtake Waugh. Ponting has won 27 and lost only three of his 35 Tests as captain.
