5.15pm That brings to an end another day of Ranji cricket. The highlight was Jharkhand's win over Tripura inside two days, with as many as 20 wickets going down in Agaratala today. For Saurashtra Ravindra Jadeja starred with bat and ball to hurt Bengal, while Punjab's batsmen continued to pile on the runs, amassing 580 against Mumbai. Parvinder Awana, who was called up to the Test squad, slammed a quick 70 to give Delhi the lead over Karntaka, but Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul ensured the deficit was easily wiped out. We'll have more stories coming up soon on the site. Enjoy your Sunday evening! Seeya tomorrow.
5.00pm Stumps in Bangalore
Kanishkaa signs off with:
"It’s stumps in Bangalore with Karnataka ending on 136 for no loss, extending their lead to 70. Quite a difference from the first four sessions of this game, where we got used to seeing a procession of wickets. Both batsmen were let off. Not been Delhi’s evening. They will have to start all over tomorrow.
Uthappa 77* (113b) 12 fours, KL Rahul 53 (74b) Nine fours."
Stumps in Mumbai as well
Amol's final update of the day:
"Rahane and Pawar see off the last half an hour as Mumbai end the day at 69 for 1."
4.45pm Baroda in command
Despite Basant Mohanty bowling 20-11-21-0, Baroda have taken the lead against Odisha, and with six wickets still in hand, including that of captain Ambati Rayudu, they will be looking at building a substantial advantage in the first innings.
4.40pm
Kanishkaa is seeing a rare good start from Karnataka this season:
"Fifty for KL Rahul. Gets there with a controlled cut over the slips off Awana. Both openers have half-centuries now. Rahul was dropped on 44 by the keeper. How much will that cost Delhi?"
No century for Chawla
Piyush Chawla, looking for his second Ranji century of the season, falls 15 short. UP however are at a comfortable 520 for 7, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was picked for India's T20 squad today, smacking an unbeaten 30.
Jadeja blasts half-century
The man can do no wrong. He celebrates his Test selection by lashing an unbeaten 53 off 40 balls, on a track where everyone has struggled to score. Earlier in the day Bengal were shot out for 112, and Saurashtra's other batsmen haven't found it easy either. Seven fours and two sixes so far from Jadeja.
4.20pm Fifty for Uthappa
Kanishkaa:
"A single towards mid-on brings up Uthappa’s 50, off 84 balls. Karnataka 95 for no loss. The best partnership of the match. Delhi waiting for mistakes."
Our reader Shefali: "Finally Karnataka gets a solid start. Dont want to jinx it, nut hoping we can bat until tea or just afetr with a big lead and get Delhi on the final day. Fingers crossed. Shame its back to work on day 3 and 4, would much rather be at the KSCA."
4.15pm Jharkhand win within two days
Jharkhand get a share of the lead in Group C with a seven-wicket victory over Tripura in Agartala. Twenty wickets went down on the second day, with Jharkhand slipping from an overnight 95 for 3 to 139 all out before Tripura were flattened for 76. Jharkhand's chase of 54 wasn't exactly straightforward, and they lost three wickets before reaching the target.
4.10pm Drama at Wankhede!
Amol:
"Even before Ajinkya Rahane has opened his account, Sandeep Sharma breaks through his defence and the leg stump goes for a walk. But hang on, IT"S A NO-BALL!"
4.00pm Mumbai lose their first
Amol has this:
"Aditya Tare, who had taken on Sandeep Sharma - the season's highest wicket-taker - by driving him for two boundaries in an over, falls to Manpreet Gony. It rose more than Tare expected and he top-edged it to offer the bowler a simple return catch. Mumbai 32 for 1. And in walks Ajinkya Rahane, who along with Ravindra Jadeja, is in contention for the last batsman's slot for the Nagpur Test after Yuvraj Singh's axing! But more than eyeing the Test cap, Rahane has a big task of helping Mumbai gape out a hole by surpassing Mt 580"
3.50pm Karnataka off to strong start
Kanishkaa brings the good news to Karnataka fans: "Karnataka erase the deficit. They are leading by three runs with their opening pair intact. Rahul and Uthappa look really comfortable out there. 69 for 0, Uthappa 31*, Rahul 37*. Nice to see some spectators for a change- around 20 in total, either side of the press box. Young fans spending their Sunday afternoon at the game."
3.45pm Maharashtra take lead against Haryana
Haryana snapped a run of three outright defeats with a victory over Delhi earlier this week, but they are in trouble again this round. Maharashtra have only lost two wickets, but have already taken the first-innings lead. Sangram Atitkar is two short of his first century this season, though he already has two other scores of 80 and more while Ankit Bawne has hit his third consecutive half-century.
3.40pm Jadeja in all-action mode
No stopping Ravindra Jadeja, who after top scoring in the first innings and taking four wickets is now on 14 off 10 balls on a track where everyone has struggled to score. Saurashtra 48/2 v Bengal.
3.25pm Jharkhand seeking two-day win
Saurabh Tiwary has been dismissed for the second time in the day but Jharkhand are still closing in on a two-day win over Tripura in Agartala. They now only need 34 more in their second innings, after Tripura rolled over for 86 in their second innings. Ajay Yadav, the medium-pacer who is playing only his second first-class match, has taken a ten-for.
3.10pm Punjab finally bowled out
Amol:
"In what would have been the last over before the postponed tea break, a frustrated Mumbai finally get the last wicket. And guess who the bowler is? Ramesh Powar! Punjab 580 all out."
2.55pm Manoj Tiwary retires hurt
A muscle pull has ended Tiwary's battle on 55. That means Bengal are bowled out for 112, giving away a lead of 97 to Saurashtra. Jadeja finishes with 4 for 48 in 25 overs.
2.50pm
Ravindra Jadeja may not be the most popular pick in the Test squad, but our reader Saurabh defends his selection: "I think Ravindra Jadeja is a good inclusion. He is a fine player, who seems to have good cricketing skills and hopefully has instincts which are important for playing at the top level as an all-rounder.He might be called upon to do a bit of bowling in the Nagpur game if selected and it would serve him well to get a bowling plan ready for a very disciplined and executing their plans to a T english batting line up. The onus,I feel, will lie heavily on the shoulders of India's spinners who had better get their act together and make the English try batting outside their comfort zone."
2.45pm It's tea-time in most of the matches
Kanishkaa bashes this out before dashing for some coffee and biscuits:
"At tea Karnataka are 38 for no loss. Uthappa on 24 and Rahul on 14. Trail by 28 runs. Confident start by the opening pair. They have batted positively, just like their coach had stressed on the previous day."
It's not tea at Wankhede, since Punjab's tenth-wicket pair is batting. Amol: "Tea is getting delayed further as Ramesh Powar drops Siddarth Kaul at mid-off. Punjab 563 for 9"
2.40pm Half-century for Piyush Chawla
Like most other leading Indian spinners, including R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra, Chawla shows he can bat a bit. He has a 30-plus first-class batting average, and slammed a 156 earlier this season. Now his unbeaten 63 has taken UP past 400 against Vidarbha.
2.35pm Tiwary waging lone battle
Manoj Tiwary may have missed out on Test selection, but he is playing a terrific innings over in Rajkot. He's unbeaten on 55 even as Bengal collapse to 112 for 9. Arindam Das (20) was the only other Bengal batsman to get to double digits. And Nos 8, 9 and 10 all got ducks. Ravindra Jadeja still on four wickets. Can he cap off a terrific day with a five-for?
2.20pm Harbhajan dismissed
And not just from the Test squad. Amol:
"Harbhajan falls. After connecting over off Chavan over long-off earlier, Bhajji tries to do it again, but holes out to Rahane. Harbhajan scored 22, Punjab 542 for 9."
2.05pm
the dropping of zaheer is a statement. a bit surprised by the retention of ishant. and maybe jadeja is seen as a like for like for yuvraj
Ravindra Jadeja celebrates his call-up with some wickets in Rajkot.Bengal are now 108/7, with Manoj Tiwary on a battling on an unbeaten 51. Does Tiwary know yet that he hasn't made the Test squad?
1.50pm
More from Amol:
And Praful Waghela, fielding for injured Abhishek Nayar, has effected a run out with a brilliant piece of fielding. Harbhajan cuts Chavan through point and the ball was racing to the boundary. Waghela first slides and saves the four and then gets up and returns the ball to the non-striker's end where Sharma finds himself stranded in the middle of the crease after Harbhajan denied him a third run. Punjab 514 for 7
Delhi bowled out: Kanishkaa reports:
"Awana’s fireworks come to an end on 74. Delhi are bowled out for 258 with a lead of 66. Vinay breaks what was turning into a frustrating stand from Karnataka’s point of view. Awana gets a short one and gloves it to the keeper Gautam."
1.40pm
Kanishkaa at Chinnaswamy:
"I don’t know if the 12th man or a pigeon passed on the good news to Awana, but he’s celebrated his call-up to the Test side for Nagpur with a fifty! He’s batting on 53 off 50 balls. Did we forget to mention the 5 wickets he took yesterday? Congratulations PA!"
Mandeep dismissed Amol:
"And Mandeep's onslaught is finally over. He shoulders one from Ankeet Chavan bowled over the wicket and the ball crashes into the off stump. Punjab 512 for 6. Mandeep 211 (306b, 437m, 32x4, 1x6). In walks Harbhajan Singh, moments after being dropped from the Test squad."
1.35pm Bhuvneshwar Kumar in Test T20 squad
Irfan is injured, Zaheer and Sehwag left out. So the pace bowling options are: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, L Balaji, Dinda and Awana. The BCCI has clarified that both Zaheer and Sehwag are unavailable for the Twenty20s and hence were not considered for selection.
"And Mandeep was almost dismissed short of a deserving landmark. He tries to drive Kulkarni Agarkar and the edge flies into the slips. But Kaustubh Pawar's diving attempt at widish second sleep goes in vain and Mandeep runs a couple to complete his maiden first-class double ton. He has reached the milestone in 269 balls, hitting 30 fours and a six. Punjab 497 for 5."
1.20pm Delhi lose their ninth
Kanishkaa:
"Appanna replaces Binny from the North End and immediately takes two wickets. Gautam takes his fourth catch to get rid of Narwal. Appanna fires it flat and Nehra loses his off stump. Two for the over and believe it or not a spinner is taking a wicket for the first time in this match. Narwal c Gautam b Appanna 29 (47b) FOW 206 for 8 in 51.2 ov. Partnership 62 runs Ashish Nehra b Appanna 0 (2b) FOW 208 for 9 in 51.4". Soon after, he times yet another reverse sweep off Chavan and the ball races to point boundary to help Punjab surpass 500
Scoreboard confusion at Wankhede
Amol says:
"Mandeep nudges a single to square leg and hesitantly raises his bat, thanks to the scoreboard displaying his score as 200. But hang on, he is on 199. And once the official scorer has passed on the message to the scoreboard operator, his individual score is changed to 199. Hope he's not dismissed right now
Amidst all this confusion, southpaw Bipul Sharma, who played 20 dots after arriving at the crease, opens his account with an emphatic six over mid-wicket off Chavan."
Reminiscent of Kumar Sangakkara famously missing out on a double-century against Pakistan earlier this year, when the scorecard showed him reaching 200, when he was still on 199. The last man was dismissed soon after and Sangakkara was left stranded.
1.15pm
On a depressing day for Indian cricket, our reader Binu remains upbeat: "We were looking for pace bowling allrounders last 5 years I think we'll get lot of players in this category now, Aashish Reddy, D Shivakumar, Amitoze Singh, Biplab Samantaray ( i assume he is a medium pace bowler) PK Punjal of Gujarat ( he is in bad form this season, but his first season was amazing for Gujarat) and add R Dhawan & B Kumar. But there are no quality spinners.Shahbaz Nadeem is the only spinner promising.Iqbal Abdulla & Harmeet Singh are not given any chance this season and Mumbai's is preferring Ramesh Pawar who is going for plenty! "
1.10pm
With Punjab taking charge in Mumbai, Amol wonders:
"The scorers in the Wankhede press box - Uday Gharat and Deepak Joshi - have been revelling in Kishore Kumar melodies while working ever since the days Mumbai used to dominate domestic cricket. Perhaps, it's time for them to switch to Punjabi rap!"
1.05pm Century for Kanitkar
Ranji century No. 28 comes up for the evergreen Hrishikesh Kanitkar, putting him third on the list behind Wasim Jaffer (29) and Ajay Sharma (31). Pity his most famous innings will be an unbeaten 11.
1.00pm
Manoj Tiwary is batting on 11 as Bengal look to overhaul Saurashtra's 209. Bengal have already lost four wickets, including that of Wriddhiman Saha and are now 59/4. Here's what Tiwary tweeted this morning.
12.55pm Wicket at last for Mumbai
Amol: "And Amitoze tries to be too ambitious. He tries to sweep Chavan, top-edges it and Dhawal Kulkarni is relieved after taking the chance. Amitoze fell for 91 (115b, 11x4, 3x6). Punjab 483 for 5."
12.50pm Delhi take the lead
Update from Kanishkaa:
"Sumit Narwal thrashes a short ball over extra cover and Delhi are now into the lead. It also brings up the run-a-ball 50 stand with Awana. Delhi cross one psychological barrier."
Runs flowing for Punjab. Amol:
"Mandeep equals his personal best of 193 with an upper cut off Dhawal Kulkarni that raced to the third man boundary. And Amitoze enters into the nineties with a six off Ankeet Chavan over long-on."
12.45pm
No respite after lunch for Mumbai. Here's Amol's latest:
"The second session starts off with Dhawal Kulkarni trying to test Mandeep Singh's strength by placing a deep square leg and deep fine leg. But the Punjab youngster bisects both of them twice in succession for a boundary. And then he reverse sweeps Ankeet Chavan, bowling over the wicket, for successive boundaries. He has raced to 187 and on course of getting his maiden double ton. Amitoze is on 84. Punjab 470 for 4."
12.35pm Ratra gone for a duck
Ajay Ratra, one of the members of Mohammad Kaif's World Cup-winning Under-19 team in 2000 who along with Kaif and Yuvraj soon made it to the national team, has been dismissed for a duck as the wickets continue to tumble in Agartala. Tripura are 36/5, just three ahead of Jharkhand.
12.15pm Rameez guides Madhya Pradesh
MP have calmly progressed to a solid 292 for 5 against Railways, thanks to Rameez Khan's unbeaten 124. So the effigies being burnt in Bhopal (as shown on Hindi news channels) can't be of the Ranji players, and is of the national team.
12.10pm Lunch at most matches
Kanishkaa sends this before queuing up for lunch:
"Close call for Delhi. Narwal edges Vinay and it just drops short of second slip with Delhi 173 for 7, still 19 short. And off the last ball before lunch, Narwal gets an inside edge past the stumps down to fine leg. Innings tantalizingly poised at the interval. The tail fighting it out, still 15 adrift. The field has gone a bit defensive, with as many as four men in the deep before lunch.
Delhi 177 for 7 in 45 ov. Narwal 14*, Awana 19. Delhi have scored 133 and lost five wickets in 30 ov this session."
Noon
Amol has a stat that shows how much Mumbai have struggled: "Experienced offspinner Ramesh Powar has raced to fifty this morning. His today's figures read 5-0-50-0 (5nb)."
Here's Amol lunch update:
Punjab go in to lunch at 451 for 4. They have added 163 runs off 31.2 overs. Mandeep and Amitoze are on a roll
Lunch Punjab 451 for 4 in 121 overs, Mandeep 169 (255b, 281m, 24x4, 1x6), Amitoze 83 (109b, 152m, 11x4, 2x6), Extras (b-9, lb-8, nb-18, w-2) 37
11.55am Saha falls for 6
Wriddhiman Saha, widely seen as the India's back-up keeper and possibly the best gloveman, has been dismissed cheaply. He has five half-centuries in five matches this season, but he can't build on that form. Dilip Nayan Doshi has him caught by Sheldon Jackson for 6. Bengal are 48/4.
11.45am Mandeep cashing in
After watching his team-mates plunder runs all season, Mandeep has finally struck form, and he's making it large. Amol:
And Mandeep celebrates his 150 by sweeping Ankeet Chavan followed by a single. And the boundary seems to have done more damage to Mumbai as Abhishek Nayar has injured himself while trying to save it. And Nayar is limping off towards the dressing room.
11.35am Delhi lose another
Kanishkaa types in:
"Puneet Bisht c Gautham b Sharath 4 (7b) FOW 144 for 6 in 38.6 ov. Karnataka are running through this line-up but pity no crowds around to watch it. That’s another story. The hosts have struck twice in as many balls across two overs. Sharath gets Bisht to edge to the keeper Gautam, pitched up and inviting the drive. Binny runs in from the North End and gets Bhatia playing a loose shot. Catching practice to Rahul at second slip. Now, 192 seems a long way off."
11.30am Punjab still going strong
Amol sends this:
"Amitoze Singh is making a mockery of Ramesh Powar's offspin. Soon after hitting him into the North Stand, which forced captain Ajit Agarkar to go ball-hunting, Amitoze hits another over long-on, in the Sachin Tendulkar Stand. And it's Ajinkya Rahane who has to fetch the ball this time around. Punjab 420 for 4. Mandeep 145 and Amitoze on 77."
11.20am
The latest missive from Kanishkaa:
“Just when things were looking up for Delhi, they lose another! And it’s the well-set Rawal, who threatened a big score with a positive knock. Change of ends works for the impressive Sharath. Teases the left-hander by slanting it across, he goes for the drive and Gautam takes a sharp catch, his third today.”
Vaibhav Rawal c Gautam b Sharath 48 (66b) Nine fours, FOW 139 for 5 in 36.5 ov.
11.15am Can't keep Jadeja out of the game
With the Indian Test squad to be picked later this afternoon, three men who could feature in the discussions are now battling it out at Rajkot. After top-scoring in the first innings, Ravindra Jadeja has now taken two quick wickets, which brings Manoj Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha to the middle. No better time to get some runs for them.
11.10am Two-day game in Agartala?
Tripura have lost four wickets already this morning, making it a total of 24 wickets already down in four sessions of the game. They are 26 for 4, still trailing Jharkhand by seven runs.
10.55am
Sensible stuff from out reader Rohit: "Indian selectors aren't likely to make wholesale changes, mind. Yuvi may give way to Rahane or Tiwari, that's it. There aren't any spinners pushing the three already in the 15. More choice in medium pace-- dinda has been thereabouts but it seems Dhoni doesn't trust him very much. Rishi Dhawan is playing well this season, but probably needs India A exposure first."
That's in stark contrast to what the Times of India's front page is demanding. Under the headline 'We've been cleaned up, it's time for a clean-up', here's the team they want:
Sehwag, Rahane, Pujara, Tiwary, Kohli (capt), Jadeja/Rayudu/Rohit, Saha (wk), Ashwin, Umesh, Dinda, Ojha.
10.40am Another hundred for Yashpal Singh
He's been a pillar of Services' batting for a long time now, and after 74 first-class matches Yashpal Singh has a healthy first-class average above 53. Earlier this season, he made his career-best score of 250, against Tripura, and missed out on a hundred earlier in the week against Kerala. He's got a ton against Goa though, and taken Services to 319 for 6.
10.35am Manhas falls
Fresh off the press from Kanishkaa:
"Mithun gets Mithun and Delhi have lost their fourth! Karnataka getting even. This was full and swinging away and Manhas went for the drive. Edge taken by the keeper Gautam. Mithun the bowler belts out a war cry that could have been heard at Cubbon Park. Next man in Rajat Bhatia. Mithun Manhas c Gautam b Mithun 29 (42b) Six fours. FOW 88 for 4 in 27.2 ov ".
10.30am
More on the wicketkeeper's debate. Our reader Saurabh, who plump for Dinesh Karthik: "Uday Kaul sure has done great for himself as his stats show-a F.C avg of 53 is no mean feat. That makes him one of the front runners for the keeper's job, along with Dinesh Karthik (who would be my personal choice;he is someone with a big heart,is a live wire, and gives you some pluck down the order which comes in handy in certain situations and does have experience of playing at the top level against international teams) and Wriddhiman Saha."
10.25am Maiden century for MP's Rameez Khan
Rameez Khan, the 22-year-old Madhya Pradesh allrounder, has reached his maiden first-class century, against Railways. He has got starts in each of his four Ranji innings this season, but this is the first time he has gone on to make it a substantial score. MP are now 249 for 5.
10.15am
Kanishkaa from Chinnaswamy:
Quite impressed with Sharath. Bowls a bit like Vinay. He has struck the pads on few occasions this morning. We've had some lbw enquiries this morning.
And soon after:
Vaibhav Rawal has been dropped on 12. Stuart Binny replaces Vinay and is let down by the slip cordon first ball! It was short and slightly wide and Rawal couldn’t resist the slash. Pandey moved too late at second slip and spilled it.
10.10am Thriller in Agartala
Jharkhand began the day on a comfortable 95 for 3 in reply to Tripura's 106, with their two most promising young batsmen, Saurabh Tiwary and Ishank Jaggi, in the middle. It as quickly gone pear-shaped for them though, as medium-pacers Timir Chanda and Manisankar Murasingh shared nine wickets to reduce Jharkhand to 137 for 9.
9.55am Plenty of support for Uday Kaul
Our reader Shefali says: "Just to comment on what I read yesterday, definitely need to try Uday Kaul, has had a few good seasons, left handed and also a safe keeper. Hope Karnataka have a good day in the field, need a good morning session, now that Shikhar is gone."
9.50am And here's Amol Karhadkar wishing everyone a good morning.
Mandeep Singh and Amitoze Singh have started the morning on a positive note. The duo have added 36 runs in the five overs, including six boundaries. While Mandeep has cruised to 117, Amitoze has raced to 17. Punjab 324 for 4
9.40am Kanishkaa has the first update of the day even before I manage to get some sort of an introductory para in. Here's what he wants you to know.
... and Kanataka have an early wicket! It's their captain Vinay Kumar removing the dangerous Shikhar Dhawan. Vinay really got it to lift off a good length, Dhawan tried to sway out of the way and gloved it to the keeper. New man in is Vaibhav Rawal
Shikhar Dhawan c CM Gautham b Vinay 38 (63b) seven fours FOW 50/3 in 16.6 ov
