SOMERSET have appointed the Tasmania batsman Jamie Cox as their
captain and overseas player for next season.
Cox, 29, who has never played for Australia, has been Tasmania's
vice-captain under David Boon's leadership for the past three
seasons. Somerset's chief executive Peter Anderson said: "We were
looking for a proven top-order batsman with captaincy ability who
would be available for the whole English season."
Cox replaces Peter Bowler, who wants to concentrate on his
batting; Marcus Trescothick has been appointed vice-captain.
Nixon McLean, the West Indies fast bowler, has signed a one-year
extension to his playing contract with Hampshire, despite his
possible involvement in the summer's World Cup. McLean, from St
Vincent, took 62 first-class wickets in his first season in
county cricket last year.
Mike Taylor, Hampshire's marketing manager, said: "Nixon was our
first choice as overseas player for next season and we're
delighted to have got him."
Sri Lanka, led by a powerful 55 from Aravinda de Silva, forced a
24-run win over Australia A in their triangular series warm-up
match on a very hot day in Adelaide yesterday. It was a much
better performance from the Sri Lankans after their opening match
against Australia A on Sunday when they were dismissed for 89.
