Martin Saggers celebrates the wicket of Herschelle Gibbs, who failed again

Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar tightened South Africa's control of their match against Kent at Canterbury with some flourishing batting late in the day. After dismissing Kent for 235, South Africa finished the second day with a 236-run lead.
Robert Key, who may well be playing in the third Test at Trent Bridge next week, did his England chances no harm with a fighting 47 before he was caught off Jacques Kallis (107 for 4). Alex Loudon and Geraint Jones then put on 87 for the fifth wicket. Loudon scored 63, including 11 fours, and Jones continued his good form with 50 from 83 balls before he was caught by Dippenaar off Robbie Peterson (194 for 5), who ended with 3 for 58. The last five wickets then fell for 41 runs as Kent's first innings petered out, but did at least avoid the follow-on.
In Gary Kirsten's absence, Rudolph was promoted to open the innings and hit a classy 65 with 12 fours. That innings also put South Africa back on track after Martin Saggers, another who will have one eye on tomorrow's Test selection, bowled Herschelle Gibbs for 8 to follow his 4 in the first innings (18 for 1), and Jacques Kallis for 6 (46 for 2). Rudolph added 90 with Dippenaar, who got one over his Test-rival Neil McKenzie. Dipenaar ended the day on 53 not out, while McKenzie was bowled for 5 by Robert Ferley (141 for 4).
