At Johannesburg, March 22. Australia won by 19 runs. Toss: Australia. International debut: N. M.
Hauritz.
What should have been an easy target, on a variable but far from impossible pitch, soon became
an extremely awkward one. A triple strike from Gillespie reduced South Africa to 23 for three by
the tenth over, and Harvey's canny mixture of swing, seam and slower balls claimed another three
by the 19th. At the other end, Dippenaar battled to 51. But in the first over from the debutant
off-spinner, Nathan Hauritz, he nicked to the keeper - Gilchrist's 200th dismissal in one-day
internationals - and the run-chase had subsided to a meek 93 for seven. Klusener blasted 83 from
77 deliveries, adding 71 with Boje, but, exciting as it was, it could only reduce the margin of
defeat. Australia's own innings had fallen short of expectations: all their batsmen reached double
figures, but none passed 37.
Man of the Match: J. N. Gillespie.
