Tom Tikolo, elder brother of Steve and former captain of Kenya, has been appointed Kenya Cricket Association's (KCA) acting chief executive officer.
The KCA chairman, Samir Inamdar, said yesterday that the association had been advised by the ICC to appoint a CEO with cricketing experience. Although there are former players in the country who are qualified for the position, Tikolo is one of the few who has remained actively involved in the game. Having led Kenya to their first ICC Trophy final in 1994 - the same year in which Kenya qualified for the World Cup - his credentials are excellent.
In the absence of the national team coach - Mudassar Nazar's contract expired last month - Inamdar told the Daily Nation that Tikolo would work with the assistant coach Alfred "Boi" Njuguna, to prepare the national squad for the forthcoming season while another coach is appointed.
Tikolo is holding the position on an acting capacity and the association hopes to fill it by the end of the month. Speaking to the Daily Nation, Inamdar said: "If we don't find somebody with the proper credentials, then we will approach applicants from outside the country."
He also revealed that various sub-committees had been formed. Joshua Kiragu, the KCA Central Province boss, was named Chairman of Development - one of the most important areas - which deals with the future of the game in the country. The Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) secretary, David "Maji" Waters, was appointed head of selection, a position which was previously held by Tikolo.
The NPCA vice-chairman, Sukbhans Singh, heads cricket operations while Inamdar is the head of media and publicity. The KCA treasurer, Nasoor Verjee, a former KCA development director, was named the head of finance. The governance and ethics sub-committee will be headed by the KCA vice-chairman, Shamji Patel.
