Following the unprecedented recent public interest expressed in
radio broadcasts of cricket, the UCB and the SABC met in
Johannesburg today to try and ensure that South African fans are
kept in touch with the national team when they play overseas.
In a joint statement following the meeting, UCB managing director
Dr Ali Bacher and SABC director of sport Koos Radebe said: "We
have met to explore every avenue to ensure that in the next 12
months all Test matches and One-Day Internationals played by the
South African team outside South Africa will be broadcast back to
South African fans via SABC radio."
The UCBSA does not hold the rights to matches played outside
South Africa, but will facilitate negotiations with the overseas
cricket boards to try and ensure radio coverage.
The next 12 months see the South African team travel to Sri Lanka
in July, Australia and Singapore in August, Nairobi in October
and the West Indies in February and March 2001.
The three one-day international matches between South Africa and
Australia on 12, 14 and 16 April in Durban, Cape Town and
Johannesburg will be broadcast on 10 of the SABC's 11 public
radio services as well as live on TV.
