Vaughan relieved after tough five days

Michael Vaughan breathed a huge sigh of relief as England managed to seal a tense draw at Faisalabad and carry hopes of levelling the series to Lahore. Vaughan was one of four of the top order to fall as England slumped to 20 for 4 before Andrew Flintoff and Geraint Jones steadied the nerves and carried the team towards the close.

"We are pleased to hold on. It is great that another Test has gone five days but we had to fight really hard. Both sets of players performed really well but full credit to my team for staying the course for five days."

Vaughan was confident his side would be able to grasp their opportunities at Lahore . "If we get the chance in Lahore I'm sure we will be able to get the win. The toss is quite important and Pakistan have put us under pressure here by getting a big first innings total."

He backed the performance of his spinners - Ashley Giles and Shaun Udal - despite them only taking three wickets in the match. "There was not a lot of help for them on the first day and they are trying their best. We have been trying to create situations where we can put Pakistan under pressure."

Vaughan said that Inzamam-ul-Haq - whose twin centuries took him top of the Pakistan century-makers list - was the difference between the teams. Inzamam, who was named Man-of-the-Match, expressed his delight with the efforts of his players in almost wrapping up the series.

"I'm very happy, the boys are playing really well. Sometimes we have been in critical positions but have fought very hard." He saved special praise for Shoaib Akhtar, who came into the series under a cloud but has bowled at blistering pace with great stamina. "He has bowled well in both Test and given more than 100%."

Inzamam also revealed he came very close to quitting the game after he made a rocky start to his first match back following his omission after the 2003 World Cup.

"It was my comeback Test after being overlooked for nearly six months following the disaster in World Cup where I scored 19 runs." he explained, "And when I was dismissed for 10 in the first innings, I thought this place does not belong to me anymore.

"The same night when I was out for 10, I discussed my retirement plans with Saeed Anwar and he advised me to first play the second innings of the Test and then we will talk about it. The second innings of the Multan Test changed my career."

In the match against Bangladesh at Multan in 2003, Inzamam pulled Pakistan from the jaws of defeat by scoring an unbeaten 138 that set up a one-wicket win. Chasing 261 for victory, Pakistan had collapsed to 205 for eight.

"The next couple of days changed everything for me as I not only managed to restore the confidence of my fan club but was also handed Pakistan's captaincy. It has been an amazing turnaround."
